Finally got it out at the LHS and this is a gem for the most part but there are a couple of things that I don't like and one is a possible issue while operating. First off the color is a close match to the Polar Express cars that we all know and love so that's a good thing for sure. The sounds are the normal clunk, clack, and squeal we are all used to BUT with some really cool sleigh bells added in. The car is well done, scale, and is nicely decorated. My first whine, is when the Min / Max switch is thrown it basically does what all the other sound cars do and that is eliminate a lot of the clunk and banging. It also eliminates the sleigh bells and that IMO is a bad move. If anything I'd like to eliminate everything but the sleigh bells. Again my personal preference not really an issue. The second thing was pointed out to me by Jim Sandman. The pickup rollers hover over the axles. While testing I did not encounter any issue, there is potential for the roller to come in contact with the axle. This is something to be aware of as it could cause shorting and in Jim's case a warm roller and axle. Again I didn't notice this but Jim did. Below are some photos and video of the car while testing. Also I included a closeup of the rollers. If the roller don't cause an issue this is a great addition to the PE line. If they do, there are ways to fix it but as we always ask...why should we have to? While I will fix mine if I have to, I do it begrudgingly and only because I really like this car.

I agree 100% Marty. The sleigh bells should have been an isolated and selectable sound set for sure. The roller doesn't really concern me all that much...

Bonus Look... Also Picked up this Lion Scale Car to compliment the PE scale cars. Typical Lionel Scale but really nice graphics. Looks like the catwalk need some pushing into place.

I'm calling these trucks - Lava Trucks. Gets fairly hot. I believe it made contact intermittently, possibly more often as it went over switches. Got fairly hot. Easy fix though - little electrical tape around the axles. Jim

Easy fix though - little electrical tape around the axles. Jim I've had a couple of passenger cars that I had problems with the rollers touching the axle. I used electrical tape on a couple but put the liquid tape on the axles on several without a hitch after that. Problem arose when going up a slight incline and one of the Fast Track switches which had a higher center rail.

Thanks for the helpful review, Marty. What WAS a prospective purchase for my Polar Express train is now a no-go. Appreciate your analysis.

Many thanks for the review Marty and to Jim for pointing out this flaw. I don't mix frieght cars with our passenger trians, so I am safe with this offering.

What I am looking into is seeing if this is a new truck design or if a different roller could be used. Seem this would have been an issue before if this is an existing design. I'm just not sure if this is a design flaw or a parts mismatch. I'll let everyone know if I discover anything.

Great review, Marty. Thanks! As you pointed out, the sleigh bell sounds should be selectable on their own. Not sure what Lionel's new sounds people were thinking there. I just wish they'd dispense with the clunking-and-knocking sounds that everybody finds so objectionable. All we're really looking for are the brake and wheel-screeching sounds... and in this case, perhaps a special set of sounds for Christmastime.
Bottom line... it sounds like these boxcars are "tolerable" if we're willing to "settle". But they're not the best they could be. Lionel simply needs to re-issue the technology and sounds used in their original VisionLine Tankers with FreightSounds. They'd surely sell every one they could make... and then some.

Go for it David.
Had I just gone with this, it would have been fine. But Pat and I started discussing a few other things. Be careful, it’s that time of year.
And then Harry calls me this afternoon to discuss some things we have in the works. Now there are more.
That’s it, done, finished, no more.
