We are learning about the wild life here. The lady down the street said there were ten in her yard last night. Next door we have Bobcats in the back yard. Also told us don't mess with them. They will attack people. They are called Javelina. Don

Nasty critters! Bobcats okay but Javalinas will try to eat you! You need a .30-.30 for the piggies…

We see bobcats too, but those hoggies are something different! I see a luau in your future.

Mmm, bacon! You must be somewhere in the far south west to have those.
Bobcats are neat critters. I was in Iowa in December on a deer hunt at a buddy's farm and kept having a momma Bobcat with two kittens pass through the fields and woods edges. Neatest thing was one afternoon 7 hen turkeys were in the field when the cats came through. I thought uh-oh, turkey dinner time, but those 7 hens started putt'in and cluckin and rushed the momma cat and drove her and her kittens out of the field in a hurry. Never would have imagined that! Very cool to witness, part of why I love sitting in the woods.

I'm not interested in eating one. Javelina are not from the pig family but they are from the rat family. I can't tell you the last time I ate a rat but I don't want to start now. Don

Javelinas are not from the rat family. Rodents are family Muridae, Javelinas are distant cousins of pigs and are in family Tayassuidae. Javs are the only true new world pig, found in much of south and central america. Neat little critters, cook them like lean pork.
But don't turn down something just because it's related to a rat, either! Muskrat is quite the delicacy in my area, although to me it tastes pretty much like squirrel. You can even buy whole/dressed muskrats in some of the local markets here, head and tails left on. They serve a lot of it at the local Outdoor show and a few festivals.

osprey, thanks for the info. Every time I read about them I see different things about them. Javelinas have very poor eye sight so some of the "attacks" are a mistake. Down our street there was a herd of ten the other night. They have even been seen in shopping centers. That would tell me people are feeding them. Big mistake! Thanks again for the info. Don
