They'll have to carry me out of the basement. That's when I stop running trains.

Certainly health issues come into play. Having said that, if you are in good health, then age should not prevent anyone from the enjoyment of our hobby. Elizabeth and I were close to 80 when we took on a build of our new layout four years ago. It was no small project as we did it all, converting of a garage into a train room, building the benchwork, and then the layout. Mind over matter. Did we have a few aches and pains in the process, sure, but the enjoyment from this build effort far outweighed any other factors. And, the beat goes on. Each year since, we have undertaken renovation projects to improve out layout. This year, a CIC project at the far end of our layout. Will this involve construction and wiring, sure. Will it require getting under the benchmark for more wiring, yes. The bottom line, it is a lot of fun and as long as it continues to be a lot of fun, then why not. I have a hard time with the you're too old theory. Just the benchwork was no small task.

I am an early riser 3:30AM (no alarm clock, just wake up), been that way after decades of working for Amoco. My first thing after taking care of business is a cup of hot coffee and going into the train room, sit back and watch trains run, usually 2. Its my way of relaxing, thinking about projects and preparing the day. After supper its always a 2 hour minimum of making up a consist and running trains or setting up for the next morning. I can't imagine or think of ever giving these activities up, by selling or stop running my trains. Its therapy for me and the wife who joins me many mornings when she gets up or evenings. I did have a choice when I gave up a hobby which I had longer then my trains or layout. My collection of flying gear, over 300 helmets alone. It was hard, but now also have room for my expansion and visions for a larger layout once everything is gone. We're not much TV watchers, but spend much more time together by the layout.

Actually have been giving this some thought as of late as I creep closer to retirement in October 2023. Thought was of having more time to do more with a train layout than I do now, and looking forward to the same. Not quite the same as getting "too old", but definitely contemplation of transitioning my interest in the hobby with a change in life moment. Initial thoughts are to trim down what I own only to the things I like the best and focus on getting them out of storage and into use. Specific thoughts on setting up a layout around the basement wall leaving room for a TV room for watching football, movies, et al. Old layout took up big footprint of 26'x 20' center area in the basement, but going to go with L shaped around the wall this time with turn around peninsulas on both ends ... I think. After that, I hope I maintain an enthusiasm for my trains until the good Lord calls. The only caveat being that should my financial planning be off, I may find myself selling sections of track to help keep the cat alive. Stashed my extra TIU and Cab2 in with the gold bullions for safe keeping.

But I gotta be back at 06:30 to go boys room , and lay back Down, maybe glue a tree before hand. And move a couple boxes in the storage closet. Cause I found another ARR FREIGHT car.

I'm trying to sell about 80% of mine as I have more than I will ever use and also I have moved to a house with a smaller train room than I had before so I have more than I ever will use. Yes one may say I went overboard buying them, I did. I will probably never sell them all.

If you can, go to the York Meet, get a member's table, and then price what you have to sell reasonably and you will go home happy.

Yes one may say I went overboard buying them, I did. I will probably never sell them all. Not engines, but have a ton of rolling stock that I would never be able to put on layout. I have engines, rolling stock, and complete sets I bought and have not actually seen light of day until I moved. I had basically 16' x 16' of train table with as much under it that I had above it on shelves and layout. I had two 16' with 8 shelves on each and one 23' wall with 8 shelves on it completely full. I estimated as much or close to as much underneath the table. I have 20 boxes of trains not counting the sets I want/need to sell. I also have some engines in OB that are not going to see daylight.
I have made six shelves 16' long on one wall in my now train room. I have another wall of shelves that are full of G scale trains, I have a 27 GL plastic tub full of 2 rail O scale trains not apart of the above mentioned. This I plan to keep along with some in two 3' w x 24" deep and 30" high cupboards I have complete sets in.
