This topic is probably something that you will only read about here as other train related forums either ignore it or most likely don't have a clue as to what's been going on. Granted, most of our Forum members have little to do with Department 56 other than maybe their spouse or parents putting up a Christmas display. Most likely as there are not many year-round Christmas layouts in our O-Gauge hobby.
Taking this into consideration, there is a huge pool of Department 56 collectors. Much larger than you might think. The hobby of D56 collecting is experiencing a resurgence as many young people are getting into it wanting to replicate the fond memories they had when they were kids with Mom & Dad as well as their Grandparents putting up annual Christmas displays. Department 56 is responding to this new market and is producing more and just sensational new products. So how does this affect our hobby of model railroading. This new D56 collector group want to incorporate trains into their displays and this is happening in large numbers. Polar Express impact, for sure, but this new market is using all sorts of O-Gauge trains.
Rather than ignore this trend, we choose to embrace it. Any growth like this is good for our hobby. That's exactly why we started the D56 Club & Forum. The OGF has proved to be leaders in this regard and though this effort is very new to us, we are successfully growing this side of our hobby and making an impact. Who better to promote trains to the Department 56 community. This segment of our hobby will continue to grow. We are positioned so well to benefit from this growth in many ways.
One other point, many O-Gauge fans are unaware that Department 56 has produced many beautiful structures without a snow/winter effect. They are marvelous and would compliment many layouts. Take a look at some.
