Have a great interest in getting into standard gauge tinplate. I got my first around a week ago, a Lionel Classics freight set with a 318e. From my reading and research, standard gauge tinplate collectors hold the Lionel Classics line from the 1980s and 1990s in high regard with respect to quality and finish. Thus far, I know they did my set, a Blue Comet set, state cars, the 381e, and a number of accessories. Does anyone know the extent of the line or how many items were done before Mike Wolf moved on to the Tinplate Traditions line? Thanks in advance.

Let me start first by saying I am NO EXPERT, when it comes to the offerings in standard gauge or tinplate by either manufacturer and that my next comments are merely thoughts that run rampantly through my little peanut brain.
When it comes to standard gauge or tinplate in general, for some, there is this idea that Lionel is the one and sometimes only producer of these types of trains. All other manufacturers are just wannabes in this market. For me, I am no loyalist to any of the manufacturers. I find all of the manufacturers, even those that have been gone long before I was introduced to this world, have created some really beautiful works of art. For example, American Flyer and Ives created some tinplate passenger trains that are phenomenal. Quite frankly, I think their passenger trains look even nicer than those Lionel produced during the same time frame. That is NOT a knock against Lionel. They produced some very beautiful passenger sets also.
In regards to your post, there are some books out there that do have listings of what Lionel has produced over the years in regards to tinplate, including the more modern line ups. Lionel did some very nice stuff in the 80’s and 90’s however MTH was just cranking this stuff out like it was the only production line they had. I have not seen a list per say anywhere that is only Lionel specific, 80’ & 90’s, tinplate. Not sure if this response is what you are looking for, but for what is worth, here it is.

Not sure if this response is what you are looking for, but for what is worth, here it is. Not meant to be rude, but, no, this isn't. The Lionel Classics line was produced from 1988 to 1993, a short timeframe. Given that, I'd expect that putting together the list wouldn't be hard. Heck, I'd do it, but I'd have to acquire the catalogs from the period. Modern tinplate collectors are sure to have a list I'd think.

So a very easy solution to your question is this: In the Greenberg's Pocket Price Guides at the back just before the list all the Club Cars, there is a compiled list (Section 4 Modern Tinplate) of the "o"gauge and Standard Gauge items produced during that period.
I hope this helps with your search.

I don't know the answer to your question but I celebrate your new freight set. I love the size and colors of these - congratulations.

Got the book, there was actually a relatively small amount sold under the Lionel Classics label. Most was sold in set form, with a few separate sale cars and engines. In total, both O and Standard Gauge make up only about two pages in the price guide. Makes for completing a collection fairly easy.

If you are still looking, it is my general impression that most if not all of what Mike W. produced under the Lionel Classics tin plate line were redone as Lionel or Tinplate Traditions later on.
Two gentlemen who may wish/be able to help you are Perry of Perry's Toy Exchange in Mt Airy MD., and Al Rudman of Sidetrack Hobbies in Leonardtown MD.
I know Al is not available until next week.
Both men are quite knowledgeable in the tin plate realm.

You are correct they both are excellent resources when it comes to Lionel and MTH stuff. Especially anything tinplate.

Yeah, Mt. Airy is just twenty minutes down the road. I've been to Perry's place a few times, but not recently. He has a ton of stuff in there, but I rarely found much that's interested me. Years ago, he carried a smattering of second-hand trains; not sure if he does that anymore.
