After moving to Arizona I started thinking of a outdoor garden railroad. We have a large back and side yard. There is a creek (powered by a pump from the pool) that runs through part of the yard and back into the pool. It would be fun to build a wooden trestle across it. The pool is a "pond type" pool in that is free forum. Just a thought, what are your guys thoughts of this project. Don Please hit photo to enlarge.

I say go for it. I’m a huge fan of outdoor layouts. Have been considering doing one of my own but have had the time to really dedicate to the idea. Then there is the small problem of needing to convince my wife that it’s a good idea.

Adam, I did a story about a garden railroad in Northern California. The guy that built it did a great job but his wife was not all that happy with trains running all over the down slope of the yard. Her husband got his wife interested in Bonsai Trees. Now there are over a hundred of the trees on the layout and his wife has a hobby with him. Maybe that's your answer. Don

With the backyard I have, I been thinking also of a garden Layout with "G" scale. An old West themed structures and engines and cars. I even suggested it to the wife and she says go for it. So its something that may happen in the future and at present only been looking and pricing at needed items.

I have always wanted to do. Got a landscape project coming up and am trying to convince my wife to let me do it. I actually have the trains and some track already to go.

I had a garden railroad when we lived in Poughkeepsie, NY. I'd had G trains in my basement on Long Island but when my job took me to Poughkeepsie the house we bought wasn't G friendly. I had wanted a garden railroad for some time so I went outdoors with my trains.
Building the railroad and running trains outdoors was a lot of fun. Battling weeds, groundhogs, mosquitos and weather (heat, brutal sun, cold, rain, snow, etc) wasn't so much fun. In the Mid Hudson Valley there aren't that many days a year when the weather is really nice.
I'm glad I built the railroad but I would never do it again. Once was enough for me. I'm not discouraging you, many love garden railroading, but recommending that you consider dealing with your particular outdoor environment when planning your railway. An outdoor railroad is very different from an indoor model railroad.

My wife encouraged me to get out of the basement and into Garden Railroading. Now 18 years later I have a G scale empire in my backyard. It will be on tour during this years National G Scale Convention in Denver, Colorado.
