And I thought it was a Lionel design... guess i was wrong. That is probably also the reason that rolling stock has a minimum weight.
Not super critical in O gauge, but it is in HO....

The same design and function is present in the form of planetary gears on your personal vehicles inside the rear differential, if you have a rear wheel drive car or truck…
