Episode 6 of LAZ's Whistle Stop Wednesday videos earlier this year (still 2021) includes a fine scene of his Menards "Oak Point" fission power station, including what menacingly emerges from it in a storm. You can see it here: o-gaugeforum.com/thread/4413/whistle-stop-wednesday-videos-06
The best thing about this, IMHO, is LAZ's narration. I can't/won't attempt to copy that! But at the time - as far as I can remember - I either had one of these accessories on order or in a box, intended to be placed somewhere on my inadequate train table. 'Way back then, I decided to enhance mine with some some effects like his. Of course, now that I have, I think I must go further. Anyway, here is phase one, covering what my daughter called the stock "disco ball" animation to the power station's new, self-generated weather system:The sound and light module is by a producer called "Iron Penguin Electronics" which appears to be a home business run by a former triathlete: tennentm.wixsite.com/ironpenguin/about1. Although the board looks to me like an old-fashioned Railsounds unit, it was dead easy to set up: I think it's very well done - and for all I can tell might be the same one Laz used. But in a way, it's almost too realistic, with the sound gradually fading out in the distance as the storm moves on. The sequence is set up to run a full minute. I think I need a siren, more lightning and other illumination, which I'm sourcing from our good friends at Evan Designs. And how about an ultrasonic smoke generator? Watch this space - although you may have a wait. Meanwhile I have another project update I'll post later.

OUTSTANDING ANDY!!!!! Wow love the sound effects you used. I might have to try and use the booms before the air raid sirens, it would be more realistic. Glad I’m not the only one who likes the DISCO BALL! Keep it up you can be my co host for WSWV!!!😉😀

Hang the storm cloud from the ceiling with thin thread and install a loco smoke unit in the stack.

Hang the storm cloud from the ceiling with thin thread and install a loco smoke unit in the stack. I need a much bigger cloud - wherever it goes. Have tracked one down . . .

Laz is such an inspiration to us all. His personality is infectious. I love the weekly Whistle Stop Wednesday Videos that stray at the Oak Point Nuclear Facility. FUN,FUN, FUN.
Terrific project, Andy.

Just to add to the fun of modding the Oak Point Nuclear Power Plant. Heres my version with the Back to the Future DeLorean making a cameo. The roaring noise you hear in the back ground is the Harry Potter Dementor Car! -Pete

Thanks, I did add a melt down siren since this video was taken…..but can’t seem to find a loud one thats doesn’t get drowned out by my layout sounds. I really like your thunder sound circuit you installed…gonna have a look at that website you posted……looking forward to seeing and hearing more of your mod! -Pete

I really like your thunder sound circuit you installed…gonna have a look at that website you posted……looking forward to seeing and hearing more of your mod! -Pete For info - the instructions with my kit mention substituting a "powered computer speaker" for the stock one, which is small. But I don't know the impedance of the speaker (if that matters) or what the amp on the board would handle. I might try contacting the former triathlete to see what the usable specs are. His website says he's an N-scaler so probably used to dealing with tinny small scale sounds.
The instructions also include a method for adjusting the volume but on trying this, I think that out of the box it's already set to max. I have a number of 8 Ohm O scale speakers and a few more sourced as past experiments, but with the version of Railsounds I was working with then the increase in volume/range was marginal (except in one case where I adopted someone else's ideas). I'm reluctant to experiment with these without knowing what this board can handle.
That said, the sound is probably enough for my purposes as the train table is in a small room. And it is realistic in the thunder department, although the setup will definitely be getting more separately powered lightning - and clouds.

The guy who made this t-storm kit, Mike Tennent, was good enough to send me the board specs. The recommended speaker is 4 Ohm, 3 Watt. I think that’s more of a small scale spec than is used in 3rail O trains but probably similar to sound-equipped accessories.
I’ve decided that the stock speaker is good enough for my purposes, or at least until I try out installing a siren, and he says he can’t get them any more and is looking for a substitute.
