Excellent photos Joe. It looks like a really nice station. Thanks Joe. I love my trips there every now and then. I grew up a few blocks away. I’m still mesmerized by the area when I’m there.

Use Newark Penn for all my Amtrak trips to VA and FL. A couple of shots of the main waiting room. They have removed all the fast food joints out and are presently restoring the benches with the PRR logos on them. An unusual Amfleet car on a NE regional.

Nice features - It's great that somebody has recognized the value of retaining that wonderful architecture. I did an image search on Newark Penn after seeing your photos - thanks! It's an impressive building.

It is a great piece of history. Its about 20 minutes from us (live not to far from Met Life Stadium). Busy most of the time with commuter trains and Regionals. Long distance trains almost always depart from track 3. There is an elevator but it's not easy to find. Red cap service is available. Last time I came in on the Star from FL the car attendant called ahead and had a Red Cap waiting for me. The northern part of the station which I assume was baggage and express in the day is now a major bus terminal for suburban buses. Often when my train is on time I'll take a bus to my town. Senior fare with a transfer costs about 1.35 vs $46 for a taxi. A photo taken from the train of the famous slogan of Trenton NJ. American Standard used to be a major employer in the area.

Looks are deceiving. The station is the worst station on the NEC. The interior is dark, dingy and essentially a homeless encampment. Access for passenger pick up or drop off is a nightmare. Access to n ewark light rail is like visiting a haunted house. The veneer might by nice but the bones are notm

Yes the traffic in front of the station is bad but I don't see NY Penn as being much easier to drive to. When I travel by myself to VA it takes at most two to three minutes to get to where I can get out and roll my bag into the station. There are of course homeless around, it is a city after all. NJT police do keep things under control and all the trips I've made I've never seen any crime or homeless folks hassling anyone. One trip home by myself I took a cab. When I got home my wife asked where my shoulder bag was, turned out I'd left it in the cab. It was 11:30PM and she got in the car and drove down to try to find the cab alone. She has been a social worker and actually worked up the road at St John's Church doing outreach. When she got to Newark one of the "homeless" approached her and gave her a bit of chuff. Liz was up to the game and eventually he told her which cab I'd taken. She got the bag and returned home safely. Attitude, some street smarts and a bit of compassion go a long way in navigating your way in cities and indeed in all human interactions.
