So, I admit I missed out on "special runs" of Orange and Gray Lionel Long Island Railroad C420 locomotives over the past 13 years. Not even sure if MTH ever did a LIRR C420. But regardless, whenever they are released they sell out fast and even when they appear on ebay and other sites, unless priced $200+ above Lionel MSRP. Obviously, these Orange and Gray LIRR C420s are money makers for whoever releases them. Yet, its like watching grass grow for Lionel to release them again, and MTH even worse as MTH decided to IMHO cop out and just paint a modern diesel in the LIRR paint scheme. Am I incorrect to assume these companies don't want to make money on hot selling items? Only thing I can think of with Lionel is its not worth their time to produce sub $800 locomotives based on profit margins? Not sure what MTH is thinking as they seem to release everything else.

Vince, they have marketing folks that direct what will be produced. This may not always be reflective of what the hobbyist wants. Plain and simple, it is what it is. You can lobby their sales people to include what you want for the LIRR, but that does not ssure it will get produced.
There is an option, buy the engines you want under a different roadname and have them cutom painted. Let me give you an example. My Rail Runner set was not happening in terms of supplier production, so I took the initiative and had Harry do it. As we speak, Gary and I want a City of Miami passenger set done. Probably will not be done again in O-Gauge. So we are picking up the equipment we need and having Harry do the set. Just an option for you. No sense growing old for this to happen.

Vince, I hear you. The only reason I have a C420 is because the Nassau Lionel Operating Engineers in Levittown (a local club) asked Lionel to produce one for the club's 30th (I think) anniversary. If you contact the NLOE, they may have a few. It's a longshot, but worth a try. Brian, I would love to have Harry paint some of my engines.

That's a good idea Brian, I never thought about Harry painting them. I am going to buy an MTH C420 and have Harry repaint it.
