What is the difference between a prewar 1666 locomotive & a 1666E?

If it is like the 1668, nothing. Lionel quit putting the "E" on the 1668 engine around 1938 (I think). The "E" was for "electric".

I have a Lionel 1666 (with no E) in one of my parts bins. I think it has a tender with one of the late-era box couplers with the simulated knuckle on the top... that might be the only difference between it and a standard 1666e. I can fish it out and snap some pictures if you'd like to compare it with yours.
