......Have I succeeded in flipping an HO model railroader to the dark side? When I was doing my first wiring checks, his verbatim statement the first time he saw a train go by on my layout was: "Who needs DCC with sound when you can enjoy that wonderful clickety-clacking?!" The layout will soon be back up and running after some scenic section work. I just heard from him and he's anxious to see the rumbling O Gauge again...... Winter is coming... Dave

When he sees how well O gauge runs he may switch. HO is much more finicky than O gauge. HO trains look great, cost less and take up less space but don't run anywhere near as well as O gauge.

Don’t overwhelm him right away. Break him down slowly. Let him take in the sights and sounds. Then add some smoke fluid to an engine to provide the hook.
Then highlight the superior tracking abilities, the simpler wiring and details of the King of Scales.
Soon he’ll be wanting to go to a hobby shop to a roomful of wonderful trains!! By April he’ll be wanting to go to York!!

Very sage advice from Brian - as in "softly, softly . . . "
"King of Scales" is also a very accurate description although I imagine most HO enthusiasts would scoff. IMHO, however, the Lilliputian sounds of most (but not all) HO engines are so inferior to O scale and Legacy in particular that they don't stand up to comparison.

I could have sworn I got some suspicion-filled sideways glances the last time I walked into our local club meeting. The main layout project is HO modular, but there's a post-war 3-railer in the bunch. I showed up with a freebie Lionel Soo Line switcher set. I found it at a local church fund-raiser and made a donation for it. I gave the set to our post-war guy and of course we had to see if it would run. We dug out a train set HO transformer and took the body off the locomotive. We kicked it over with the fixed AC voltage and that wonderful smell started wafting through the room. I know they were all in denial, but I could see that glint in their eyes.... Dave

Nope... then he will see the price tag and space required and he will quickly run away!

Nope... then he will see the price tag and space required and he will quickly run away! It's all relative, I figure. You should've seen the reaction from our resident N-scaler when he found out my Lionel Docksider cost about 1/3 of his DCC steamer! Dave
