Have you or do you try to build prototypically correct passenger consists? I have tried to do it twice. It is difficult because the manufacturers generally don't make enough sleepers. They do make those idiot Combine cars. Has anyone ever actually seen one or even seen a picture of one in a consist? Not I.
I have tried to do this with the UP City of Portland and the California Zephyr (Western Pacific segment).
I have come close with the CoP (again, sleepers being the hangup), but I have come very close with the WP.
I got hooked on the CZ when I watched a Travel Channel program on it. Liked it so much I want out and bought the video and set out to recreate it. I was fortunate to find a K-Line set (ABA F7’s, baggage, three dome chairs, dome Observation). The A units were powered. The B was not. The cars are 15" which fits my O54 layout just fine. Monster cable cluster connecting the two A units. I was shy about 6 cars. The diner was very hard to find, but eventually, I was successful. I found some cars without the engines and had Harry Hieke change the names. Then I scored a pair of Lionel sleepers. The font is a little different, but good enough. I had Royztrains LED all the cars.
Over time, the motive power shifted to Lionel and current configuration is Legacy ABB F3's, all powered.
Recently, I saw a pair of 18" sleepers from Lionel and grabbed them. Yes, they are longer than the others, but I willing to live with that. That gave me the requisite number of sleepers. Yea
Here is a video of my very close to prototype California Zephyr
F3 ABB Baggage 3 Dome Chairs Dome Lounge 2 Sleepers Diner 2 Sleepers Dome Observation
This is the configuration for the inaugural run.

Good idea, Forrest, but the size of a layout may preclude doing this. I run eight car passenger trains as an example.

True, Brian. You could make a very good argument that three F3’s and 11 cars is too much for my layout. I certainly have no intent to try this with any other trains. I was just challenged by the idea and this special train. Overall, I am pleased with the results.
If I could find another 15” Lionel sleeper 2 pak I might swap out the 18” cars. If I really wanted to stretch, I would rename one of the sleepers to Silver Rapids to represent Pennsylvania’s coast to coast sleeper.

Forrest, I don't nor have I ever tried to run a prototypically correct consist on my layout for 2 reasons. First, with very few exceptions prototypical consists would be way too big for my medium size layout. Second, I don't follow the prototype very closely. I run what looks good to my eyes rather than trying to be prototypically accurate.
I think combine cars are used more on model railroads than in the real world. I'm not 100% sure but I think I've seen them on narrow gauge railroads. I can't recall ever seeing a combine car on a standard gauge railroad though there probably were some.

Those CZ trains are real lookers - that's an impressive assembly you've managed there. My track space allows me to squeeze in regular RailKing and Williams four-car consists, so I just go for a good look. I also run a Lionel FT Canadian Pacific set but that 3-car set does look a bit short. As much as I'd like to, there's no room for a prototypical CPR Canadian, seen here just west of Lake Superior in 1980. It has an extra deadhead car giving an 8-car consist. My saving grace is a couple of local mixed trains in my area that ran into the 1970s - a couple of passenger cars and a boxcar or two 😉 [Photo: B. Martyniuk] tinyurl.com/2kzjcfyp

That is a very nice consist, Forrest, especially the dome observation car. Only two attempts at something like that in my case, with 18" or scale length cars. The scale one was a Santa Fe Super Chief made by GGD. The other was quite different, based on the Lionel Shasta Daylight set 18" cars, which are not scale accurate but are among the best 18" aluminum cars Lionel ever produced. In both cases the main problem was the sheer length of the whole consist if you added in all the cars needed; the Super Chief was 19 feet long. Since then, like PTC, I have stuck with no more than 8 cars, and concentrated on the detailing of individual cars.
I have seen plans/blueprints for combine cars used on some railroads. But the 3rail variety are just inferior compared with RPO or full baggage cars, and I believe in Lionel's case they included them in certain sets as a cheaper/easier substitute for such cars - possibly because they already had extrusions or the tooling for them and not the others.

I try to stay consistent in the time error and put the proper caboose on. But otherwise have fun.
