I have to admit I have a large collection of catalogs from the past 20 years or so. I am really thinking it's time to heave them. I will probably download as many as I can from Lionel and MTH but the paper copies are just taking up too much space.
What's your thoughts on keeping them? They've become so much bigger and really serve no purpose than just to have them.

I stopped saving them. I do keep those that I consider as outstanding, like the first Lionel Signature Catalog.

I haven't had near as many as most of you. I only kept a few copies of those I have received or picked up. I have kept all the magazines. Having thoughts of tossing some of them now that you can check them out in digital.

Use to save catalogs and magazines. Just got to much. Except for a few catalogs (3), and couple early magazines on farming (Prairie Farmer). They took up space (a lot), so disposed of them with no regrets. Now have free space to store items that wasn't available before.

I don't have the room, and since most dealers charge you for one and the fact they are online. No more.

I toss them out after a few months. No reason to keep them laying around...

I have Lionel's back to 1947. K-Line from start to finish. I keep MTH for 1 year then pass them on at train shows. Just drop them on the flyer table and they will disappear. I did the same with MR, Gave JDaddy my OGRs which he read and passed on. I have all the CTTs.

I enjoy train catalogs very much. While lying in bed it is nice for me to look through them while the bride is reading a book or e-reader. I grab and keep the two main Lionel and MTH catalogs. I don't have or want a laptop so catalogs work for me.

There's only so much space available these days. And with everything "on digital", it's easy to look up something rather quickly. So aside from my childhood favorite, the 1966 Lionel Catalog (my first) which I always plan to keep for sentimental purposes, all other printed catalogs hit the recycling file within a year of publication.
It's tough at first when you decide to dump several years/decades worth of catalogs. But once you let go, you'll realize life moves on just fine.

I have digital copies on my iPad. They're all accessible with a couple a touches of the screen. No clutter. The paper copies have all been dropped in the recycling bin.

I have all the Lionel catalogs from 46-69. I have most of the MPC/LTI catalogs
I have gotten rid of all the modern catalogs from all manufacturers.
......and then John Holtman came out with his digital archive......and the LCCA has it online as a perk of membership....
I probably will just keep the PostWar ones.....I’m sentimentally attached to them......they are from an era when I had all the pages memorized (and still pretty much do). Nowadays, there are too many catalogs to keep track of.....and, they are mostly online. I just don’t feel the attachment.....

I like keeping the MTH catalogs mainly as a reference on history of the locomotives. MTH does a great job describing the engines history and stats. I however agree you can only keep so much stuff. Anything over 4-5 years old gets recycled.
