I was thinking of creating a standard gage portable layout to host for my open house.
Something that is simple. Any ideas? I have a 3 car garage but only one stall available...

2-3 banquet tables in an "L" shape, covered with landscape paper, lay track. Start with the inner corner, it'll be tight.

I have a 6’ x 7.5’ temporary tinplate layout with an oval of USA Track with 57” diameter curves. I put it up so I had a place to run, test run, and display my Standard Gauge trains and accessories that I bought to run with the SGMA club. (A floor layout with me on my knees got old fast) I couldn’t just let them sit on the shelves or in boxes between shows. I also didn’t want to give up the room space for when I have people over to watch the permanent layout of O Gauge trains, or for special projects. The layout goes up and comes down in 15 minutes.
The layout is just track and accessories, laid on a bedsheet, over 3 6’x30” “Lifetime” folding plastic tables I bought at Home Depot.

How portable do you want it to be? If this is for use in your garage only, maybe a Murphy bed type of design would be a good choice. That way you could fold it into the wall when not in use and get a portion of the garage back for other purposes. If you are looking for something very simple, then I would suggest using a portable ping pong table as a foundation. Has a nice 5’ x 9’ platform area to work with that could be folded and rolled to one side of the garage. What you are asking would also be dependent on what and how you want to run your trains. A simple oval, oval with passing sidings, oval, passing sidings and a switch track or two? Maybe a figure 8 or an “L” shaped layout. Just like the fabulous layout in your basement, think about what you want and where you want it to go. By doing that, you will create a great portable standard gauge layout.

I love the bedsheet idea. My Hornby O gauge little layout is portable. It uses a 3 by 5 table with folding legs I built for an N gauge layout. Back before I had a basement, I would slide that table behind a couch when not in use.
