Good morning everyone. I purchased a used Lionel 6-28314 Vision Line Legacy Genset Switcher. It is something I have wanted for a long time.
I do have a question about this unit's speed. When using Legacy there are preset speeds on the hand held remote. You can push one of the speeds and the unit will run at that speed for as long as you want. If you are running two Legacy units set on the same speed setting it is great because they will both run at the same speed and not run into each other.
I noticed on the Genset the hand held remote control speed setting is not the same as the other Legacy engines. I thought that might be because it is a switcher and they normally do yard work at slow speeds.
Is this a typical feature of the Genset??? Will your Genset run at the same speed as other Legacy Engines when they are both on the same speed setting?

Thank you Fab. Acquiring this wasn't easy or cheap. I just want to make certain it is operating correctly.
Beautifully detailed and interesting unit. Will serve my purpose perfectly because I stage my consists before adding the prime movers.

Hi WOOD, Here is a video I remember watching and in the comment part is how he did it. Hope this helps.
The genset does run at a lower speed than the road engines, however there is a way to make them run at the same speed. First, you must make sure that your switcher is set to DSW ( diesel switcher ) in your engines set up menu under "Type". Second, build your lashup and press "SET". At that point you should get an "Information message" that says SWITCHER LOCO IS NOW SET TO ROAD ENGINE SPEEDS, CLEAR LASHUP TO REVERT. Press "OK" then press "SET".

Laz, Thank you so much. I am glad to know, instead of worrying about a bad engine and ergo a bad purchase. Neat little video and I saved it to keep the instructions, although I doubt this switcher will be in a consist.
It is a very cool engine. Heavy, all diecast and super detailed. I love the lighting in the cab for all the instruments. After I get some more runtime in I will post a little review.

Wood, I have this engine and always assumed the slow speeds were set to help highlight the smoke feature. At the slowest speed, only 1 smoke stack is active and the other 2 have a closed smoke lids. Increases in speed activate additional smoke stacks. You can get all three smoke stacks going without the engine moving too fast to notice. Emile

I did that last night Emile. It pumps some smoke out when it labors. You can pull down on the left side brake setting, the diesels roar and the smoke pours out of all three stacks. This will be fun staging consists. I'll say again, pretty neat unit and I am glad I was able to find it.

WOOD, I have this engine and it is very cool with the three stacks working. If you use the tea kettle tops they have a tendency to stick open at times. Clean them with rubbing alcohol if this occurs. Have fun with this gem.

Is this the display on the remote that appears when you press the "SPEED" button? I Don't think that this has varied between different versions of the Legacy system and I don't recall mine looking different when running the Genset. Neither the manual for this engine nor the latest Legacy system manual I have (V. 1.6) shows anything but the usual six speed setting symbols for this engine or indeed diesel switchers generally. Maybe you can post a photo of what your speed setting display actually looks like? In any case, the VL Genset is geared lower than Lionel road engines and the fantastic slow speed performance reflects that. The Bill Yates video linked above is one for the knowledge base although I've never contemplated lashing up my Genset with other engines. I have a question for you; if you have the engine on a powered track with the sound system off (as in before starting the engine up), do you hear a fairly loud and constant buzz from the engine? Mine does that and many, but not all, Genset owners reported the same when the engines first came out. This bothers me although once the sound system starts up it drowns out the buzz. I have a similar issue with other early Legacy engines (UP 844, ATSF 3000) but for some unexplained reason not the other VL diesels that were issued at the same time as the Genset, i.e. the VL GE Evo Hybrid and the CP version of the same engine. Short tip on cleaning the stacks with the rain caps; alcohol can remove a layer of paint or other coating that is on these so be careful if you try and clean the rain cap hinges with it. It's slightly annoying that these tend to stick in the open position but after very little use they will be coated in smoke fluid residue that produces that result.

HB, I did check this and yes there is a low grade hum with the sound turned down. If I turn off my earing aides it's just fine.

They are great when the smoke stacks work! Details are nice. But I have regulated myself to running trains in an earlier era
