Operating Crane and Tender car set should have been Vision Line products.
As I am getting ready for this weekends Midwest TCA Modular event, I was looking at the items that I don’t normally take to shows for various reasons. However, I decided to unbox this set (Crane and Tender Car - Non Legacy) and started playing with it just to make sure it still worked.
This is from the 2003 production… power on, program and with my Legacy Remote, everything worked just as I remembered. Not sure I want to have this within arm’s reach of visitors, but it is something I will run on one of the sidings, in the background. The detailing, rigging and operation are fantastic.
This brings me to the point. On another thread people are asking/wishing for the next Vision Line product, we seem to generally overlook items that are not engines/locomotives as a Vision Line option.
I’m not sure what the next Vision Line product will be, don’t really care as I like to be surprised at what the manufactures bring to the market, but I will say that if you have a chance to play with one of these (Crane & Tender) sets, you will probably be surprised at how much fun you can have.

Excellent point, Charlie. The Grand Central Terminal was the first Lionel non-engine product that was offered under the Vision LIne.
Lionel should absolutely look at Vision Line products that are outside of the engine product line.

I hear you Charlie. The locomotives do tend to get most of the attention. Lionel crane cars are neat additions to one's collection. We were able to get The Legacy model of the D.T.&I Crane and Boom Car set from Gryzboski's earlier this year. Got the set at a great price,. They still have a few left. Thought about painting it in C.N. colors but the D.T.&I has grown on me. So it will stay as is. Lots of operatig possibilities. Gary.

I agree completely. For years, I've been saying that Passenger cars with animated interiors would be a big step forward. We already have animated boxcars with people popping out of the door or walking on the roof. Animated Waiters and Conductors would be a nice addition.

I only have a single vision line purchase. The Vision line cattle car. Who could resist a quilling cow?

The VL Ethanol tank cars were, as far as I remember, the first VL rolling stock and still the best. It's a mystery to me why Lionel has not re-released these but maybe their current factories can't be trusted to make them.
Nothing in Lionel's recent approach to passenger car production leads me to think they'd produce animated cars but the Legacy StationSounds diners deserve to be branded as Vision products for their excellent sound features. Whenever I am feeling grumpy about Lionel QC I remind myself of these cars and the VL Niagara and I feel a little better. (On the other hand I have two AC-9s with speed control and engine ID issues that I don't know how to fix - grrrrr ).

Charlie we really like the crane and boom car and have the N and W. Now if we can just get the layout to the point that we can use it. Glad to hear that it is a lot of fun to use.

Double postscript: 1. I have just seen that the VL auxiliary water tenders have started arriving. This is pretty much the same die cast tooling Lionel has used for years (by now they will have got their money’s worth) with added sound features but the design is still the now outdated slope-sided tender. However, looks real nice with different lettering: 2. Agreed re the TMCC and Legacy crane and boom sets, which have great play value. If you ever open one up or just study the service documents, it is obvious that these are among the most intricately complicated products Lionel has ever made. They are far more complicated than most diesel engines! Production of these started before there was a Vision Line but they reflect some commendable innovation on Lionel’s part.
