I spoke to Steve Nelson (aka Mr. Muffins Trains) at York about a couple of upcoming train goodies. And he mentioned Lionel is due to receive the NYC J3a Hudsons on November 1st in North Carolina. He's expecting HIS shipment at the store about a week-and-a-half later. Also included in this shipment should be his exclusive special-run D&H and Lehigh Valley C-420's, of which I pre-ordered two road-numbers of the latter LV units #414 and #415. I'm still debating adding the D&H #413 to the mix, because we all have our limits.
My pre-order for a Hudson is actually with Pat's Trains, however. Both Steve and Pat produced special-run Hudsons that were a bit more toward my taste than any of the models Lionel included in this year's big catalog. Steve's Hudson has the PT tender with water-scoop effects, while Pat's has the standard tender. Since I already have two VisionLine Niagaras with the water-scoop effect, I opted to keep things simple with the Hudson. So I ordered #5416 from Pat. Word on the street is the same factory that made the VisionLine Niagaras also made these Hudsons, so that's an encouraging ray of hope that all should be well.
I'm really looking forward to this model, because I sold the Lionel TMCC version a few years ago. And I didn't spring for the VisionLine Hudson. So aside from the streamlined Hudson ESE Lionel did several years ago, my roster has missed a well-detailed Hudson. And Lionel did a great job in the detail department -- even as far back as the early 2000's when the TMCC Hudson came out with the Madison cars. I actually like the level of detail on that Hudson more than what Lionel did with the VisionLine Hudson. So we shall see in a few weeks if Lionel hit the mark with this latest Legacy Hudson J3a.
Anybody else out there waiting on this new J3a model? And if so, did you order one of the special-runs? Or one of the cataloged models?
