I have DCS and Legacy. I’ve used both systems from day one. I got the Wi-Fi set up when it became available. I guess I’m lucky, because I’ve used it without issue. The majority of my engines are MTH only because Lionel has made only a few of my road name (Long Island Rail Road). After the Wi-Fi came out I rarely use the remote anymore. It just clicked. Not that the handhelds are bad, but an iPhone or iPad is fine for my purpose. I typically only run one train at a time.

I've said this before, but it shouldn't be very expensive to create a new kind of "remote". This remote would dummy in all aspects. Each button would simply send a signal over bluetooth to the WIFI device (phone, tablet, etc) running the DCS app. This is no different from a bluetooth keyboard that people use to turn an iPad into a laptop.

Borh MTH and Lionel are faced with the same problems with their electronics in being outdated in their systems. Andy has already said that TIU has reached its memory capacity in what they can do with it so it needs to be updated. However, MTH is moving away from a remote. Lionel has similar issues with its system but they are not pushing their remote out the door yet!

Really is time to tool up a new remote. Hence sales will surely drop.

The death of the handheld, dedicated remote has been trailed for years by both Lionel and MTH and for the same reasons, including obsolete components (that reflect their own decision not to update their underlying system technology).
A year or so ago Howard Hitchcock gave an interview in which he made it clear Lionel was moving away from the Legacy remote and was none too reassuring that any new user interface would work with the Legacy system or all of the features it currently supports.
But I am a little passive about this. I will also get a DCS remote while they are still available and put it away. But in fact it’s the TIUs I have had that have eventually failed and had to be replaced.

There’s no wrong way to run and enjoy model trains. As long as you’re having fun, that’s all that matters. Running conventional, with a remote or a phone is fun for me.
I’m sure there is a sound business decision on why MTH and Lionel want to get out of the remote manufacturing. Since everyone has a phone these days, especially the kids who they are targeting, why continue to build something they are running out of components for?
I have found that most problems with technology are from operator errors. I had some issues initially with DCS, but after doing some light research and a little experimenting I got it to run perfectly along with Legacy. All without fancy wiring.
Buckle up ladies and gentlemen, the day is coming sooner than you think when we’ll be operating our train from a chip in our foreheads!! :-)

I don't even like the word WIFI or is it an acronym? I tried the WIFI app on a phone at I Love Toy Trains. It held my attention for about a minute. I just prefer the remote. I'll use it as long as I can.

I don't even like the word WIFI or is it an acronym? ... Yes, it's an acronym. It stands for Wireless Fidelity.
