What specific phase of your layout do you enjoy the most and why? Benchwork, laying track, scenery, making structures, electric, or operating? I did enjoy making my bench work. I used L-Girder, and ripped the parts down from full sheets of 3/4” birch plywood. But now that I’ve moved through several phases, I’m finding that I enjoy scenery and creating buildings on my layout. And I’ve built my layout to operate. So that is something I’m looking forward to in the future. Let’s hear what you like most!

Like you, we are in a building stage. Before we started the layout, we built buildings, etc for 3-4 years. That was the most fun. Paula did the interiors and I did the structure and lighting. It was fun to be creative.
Like most of us, we have plenty more buildings to complete.

I enjoy the most building kits, especially Andre's and adding lighting and interiors painting and weathering them. Also adding details to freight cars and scenery. As to running, I have a card system I use, (each freight car and engine has a card made up), were trains are made up with one of my switchers, then a road engine picked, fueled and cards picked for what industries to drop off full or empties are picked up and left. Meanwhile passenger trains are run and have priority and make station stops.

Like everyone else I like all aspects of the hobby. My favorite is tinkering with engines along with upgrading engines and replacing lights with LEDs.

On my last build I enjoyed all of it. I would say operating it was top of the list and it didn't operate the way I wanted. So now on to number two build and already having my doubts on it! lol Hopefully one day I can say "finishing it"!

Running trains on a scenicked layout is by far and away my favorite part of the hobby. Creating scenes for the trains to run through is second.

Probably the best aspect for me is to create the scenery. Otherwise, no where near as much fun running trains on a blank canvas. I have often compared a layout to a Broadway show. The trains are the actors. Very boring to go to a show with just actors on stage. The scenery makes the production come alive.
Elizabeth and I had a blast designing and adding the scenery to our layout. Every visitor has agreed, it is the scenery that they remember most.

Every visitor has agreed, it is the scenery that they remember most. Guess I'd have to agree with that. Visitors to my layout were always impressed with my over sized mountain and super wide waterfall. I liked the waterfall even though my attempt to do it out of yarn kinda failed.

Interesting answers guys. Now a follow up to the original question. Do you like those particular aspects because you’re good at that activity or because you just enjoy doing that activity and the result it brings? RJ, I never would have thought to use yarn. That’s creativity at its best! Brian, you make an excellent point!

Scenery and kit building, then kicking back and running.

I find that I really like model building and planing for the scenery. But I'm happy with the few engines and boxcars that I have....said no one ever

I'd say that the part of building a layout that I am good at is wiring. Wiring is important. The trains run, buildings light up, and accessories work because of wiring. I like the results of wiring but wiring is a chore. I'm not that creative nor am I very good at making scenery but I enjoy it so much more than wiring. And, of course, running trains doesn't take any great ability. It's so easy a child can do it, but it's the funest part of model railroading.

Wonderful follow up question, Andy. In terms of scenery, the only way you get good at it is through practice. As a kid, I was building layouts at 8 years old. Several layouts later, my skills have improved greatly. That experience as a kid has served me very well as I have been able to apply these creative skills to many other aspects of daily life. The old expression that "practice makes perfect" sure applies to this question.
