I had heard some time ago that they are building a very deep tunnel so that the LIRR can stop at Grand central. I believe that now the trains only stop at Penn Station. Correct me if I am wrong.

Did not hear that. Penn station was a natural since the PRR owned the LIRR.

I just checked it out on Google, and yes they are building what is called "Eastside access" & soon the LIRR will stop at Grand central.

There is a tunnel that Amtrak uses to go from Penn Station to the Hudson Line, as all Empire Service Amtrak trains depart or terminate at Penn Station. I am not sure if it actually connects to Grand Central or not. I don’t think it does as the scheduled stop before and after Penn Station is Croton Harmon....
The Long Island connection is slated for a 2022 completion I believe....
