Does everyone keep the original boxes their locomotives/rolling stock come in? I see a lot of people selling stuff where they still have the boxes. I'm thinking of ditching mine as I can cut down storage space drastically by merely packing everything in foam.

Aaron,
Yes, I would suspect that most people save boxes from Engines and many cars. I do for Lionel and MTH. Boxes help with the value for resale.
For lower cost items such as Menards cars, I generally dont save boxes.

Saving them with the room they take up is a pain however I have found many times over the years that I was glad to have the box. For safe storage or travel you can't beat having the box. Plastic bins are heavy, one cardboard box can hold a good amount of cars.

When the times comes to sell your inventory, you will be happy you kept the boxes.

Like Adam stated. I keep the important boxes. There's another thread covering this question. You can search it out. You might get overload on info but it's out there. lol

This question comes up every now and then. SAVE ALL OF YOUR BOXES! Just store them under your layout table. If you have too many boxes to store, then you've accumulated too much stuff. 😳

I keep boxes for engines and passenger cars. Same here... Plus my valuable freight units, like articulated cars

I keep my trains and passenger cars in their boxes until ready for use. Freight cars are in shallow plastic tubs.

Yeah, that describes my position (too much stuff). I have kept all of the engine boxes, most of the rolling stock ones, and even shipping cartons they came in if labelled at the manufacturing end. Takes up a lot of space but I've assumed it's worthwhile.

I am another one that only keeps locomotive boxes. Storage space is at a premium in Florida homes where we have no basements. When I got back into O gauge in 2014 I started with a set. I stored that box and all the rest for a few years but eventually got rid of them. If I ever have to move I can pack my trains more efficiently without the boxes than with them. I know that many say that having the original box increases resale value but I've never seen that.

If your pitching boxes I need a box for a Lionel locomotive:
Lionel 6-38080 Western Pacific TMCC Scale 4-8-4 GS-64 #485
I would likely buy from you.

DON'T ditch. Biggest mistake you could ever make. My collection is constantly revolving. Things I had in 2007 I've since sold and purchase a new. Your trains will be worth much more with the boxes. If you kick the bucket and your family has to sell your collection it will be much easier for them. If you move it will be much easier to keep your trains safe. Never ditch the box.
If you watch my Youtube videos you can see in the background the racks of empty boxes.
