I started using red rosin paper three layouts ago. I rolled it out where the benchwork was to be installed and then a installed the track to be used and traced it onto the paper. This step made sure that the track would work when installed on the benchwork and we also placed the structures to make sure the "plan" was correct as well.
The current layout was tricky as I had to build benchwork under the benchwork for the Polar Express side to accomodate the CIC trains and without the red rosin paper to make a guide, it would have been a very difficlut task as I was working under very close quarters.
If you are building a new layout or planning an additon, consider the red rosin paper step.

Great idea, I will remember this for the next layout. I used blue tape on the floor to mark bench work then came up with my plan. The paper would be nice to have the blueprint of your track design.

I guess I probably did mine a hard way. I laid the track on the floor and built the bench work over it.

Thats another way of doing it. If it worked, good deal.

Great idea Brian. looks like it would be an easier way to correct or change your track.

Gary, this system is foolproof. You are correct, this is the time to make corrections, not when the benchwork is built and it is too late.

Great idea Brian. If I ever build another layout, after designing it on the computer, I will use the red rosin paper to make sure it all fits as planned.
