What do you use to bring back the shine on the copper domes and railings of a prewar 262 steam engine. I don't want to screwup the black paint.

I use a Dremel with either a polishing wheel or pointed tip with polishing compound. Start on a medium speed and work back and forth. Don't stay in the same spot too long. Wipe off any left over grime with a microfiber cloth. If the brass is really tarnished, it might take a few passes.

I noted that some of the copper was painted when released from the factory. Unless its dirt, I would just leave it as is.

I have a prewar 248 and its cars that I carefully use a soft cloth to shine. In certain unpainted places, I've used a pencil eraser.

The brass and copper was usually lacquered at the factory. Take the remnants off then polish. Better to just leave it be, but y'all can do what you wish.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I think I will leave it like it is.
