This is video I recorded earlier this year 2020 & last year 2019 of Lionel Legacy West Side Lumber Company Shay #5 on Corner Field Model Railroad Museum.
I love the chugging & whistle sounds in this locomotive.

The Shay is truly an interesting little engine. Great videos of this model, Tom.

The Shay is truly an interesting little engine. Great videos of this model, Tom. Yes, on both counts. To show my ignorance, I thought that in the second video the engine was pushing a track bumper ahead of it!
I would very much like a Shay but have been put off by drive train issues with some of Lionel's.

Two excellent videos Tom, thanks. While I've never been a big fan of the shay but it is an interesting locomotive and sounds great.

Interestingly the Shay should not chuff or chug. They sound completely different than a rod locomotive. Everyone should take a trip to Cass. While there make sure you experience a Shay, Heisler and a Climax. I'll get back to Cass for sure!

Thanks for the video, Charlie. I had no idea what a real Shay sounded like.

Wow that’s so interesting to see. When did you go? Seems like it is not open during York

The geared locomotives always seem to be working so hard for the speed they're doing - the whole point of the geared engine of course.

Very unique locomotives. I was lucky enough to ride behind the Roaring Camp shay about 10 years ago. Lots of fun!

When the Lionel unit is up in speed the sound is close but still definitely not right. The whistle is great.

yep they just need to speed up the chuffs to represent each piston firing...

yep they just need to speed up the chuffs to represent each piston firing... I can see as well as hear that would be the case, and surely it must be possible. Are MTH Shays any better in that respect? Anyway, great whistle!
