Great article, David. Thanks for sharing it here.
Seeing the photo of New Brunswick Station brings back great memories. I grew up in Somerville, a short drive from New Brunswick. Every few months, Dad and I would go to New Brunswick Station on a Saturday afternoon to watch trains; GG1s were still running back then, and it was a real thrill to see them fly by at probably 80+ mph; we saw the Metroliner many times as well. After watching the real trains, we always paid a visit to Steve Varga's Hobby Shop in downtown New Brunswick. He and Dad were buddies, and going into his shop was like going back in time. It was a true old-fashioned hobby shop. NB Station was also where Dad went to see Sen. Kennedy's funeral train pass by.

Would love to know her name. It's a VERY small town. If you made a left onto Main St., and walked toward the center of town, our's was the first street on the right... Highland Ave. Joe, my aunt and uncle's house was on the other side of the train station from yours. We'd walk up Holland Ave from the station and then make a left into Maple St -- just before Holland meets Rt. 206. My uncle had a well-known independent plumbing business in the area: Tom Dante Plumbing & Heating. He was a one-man show. I recall when my aunt passed away at 69 years young -- sometime in the late 1990's decade, the turnout for her viewing was HUGE because everyone in the Bernardsville, Far Hills, Peapack and Gladstone area knew my uncle through his business. My aunt's viewing was TWO NIGHTS -- not as common anymore, and for both nights attendance was packed with the greeting line out the door.

The Dantes are a old time family in Peapack. I grew up with Gus Dante, who is still going strong at 79. I catch him on Facebook now and then.

All this talk of New Brunswick's train station .........
As it turns out, my Great Grandfather and, for a short time, my Grandfather worked for the PRR. They both lived on Cozzen's Lane (North Brunswick) across US1 and the NEC. We would watch trains on the NEC at Adams Station - now the MOW Base for Amtrak (Adams Base). GG1s and EP5s (?) ruled the day. On Sundays, we went to the NEC to go look for treasures the trains had left....spikes, red flags, the occasional flare.....we put pennies on the track as well. I have a remembrance of going to a hobby shop on Easton Ave - not very sure if it was Steve Varga's or not........The Vargas were a BIG family name in the area.
The occasional trip to NYC with Grandmom was always going from New Brunswick Station.
We saw Kennedy's funeral train on Black Horse Lane in South Brunswick -- you could see the trains coming for miles as it was a straight shot north or south bound (in Railroad terms, East or West bound....)
