Customizing can be as easy as adding interior elements. Just a little glue is the only tool you need. Emile, I hadn't thought of this but I customized a couple of boxcars and will do some more.
When one wants to show doors open on boxcars, nothing worse then a plain metal painted floor showing. Adding a plank flooring is as easy as 1-2-3 and gives the boxcars realism and easy to add for nothing more then using your printer and some chalk. I've had here a post on how I make my wood flooring for boxcars.
Lines spaced 1/16", add a dark wide light streak with the crayon on computer, then print. Cut to size for boxcar, lightly paint. When dry glue to floor and add additional weathering chalk and seal with clear matte.

Along with his weathering Harry's repaints are so well done. You can learn a lot from him in just one conversation as well!

That's a great way to do a custom floor! Thanks for the tip.

One easy way to add a touch of realism to rolling stock or customize, to the flat cars. These cars were exposed to the elements and abuse by their loads. Inexpensive Menard flat cars can be improved, customized. To give them a more realistic and upgraded look. First thing is to fill in the holes from provided loads and sometimes the screws that hold the wheel sets and show through. Plastic wood makes a good filler, spread with a razor blade edge, then using a toothpick (my go to tool) and back of blade to recover the wood grooves. Running a fine hacksaw blade across lightly to roughen the wood planks. Spray paint the wood planks (I use Rust o leum Camo Sand, then give it acrylic Burnt Umber heavy wash. When dry, a Black Wash. Pics, Original as came from Menard. Holes left on boards, reclaiming plank lines, finished look.

I only found the time to do jpg posts this weekend. Had to look back a fair ways to dig up this topic.
Here's my own creation....and I believe the first to attempt this twisted fantasy theme.
Lights added to my french coupe.
This former beat up 390 needed a jolt of color other than it's original black. I confess to leaving the hand striping to a professional.

Bruce, absolutely phenomenal work. The GG1 conversions is the best I have ever seen. I want one. Thanks muchly. The metal MTH body swapped out in the conversion waits patiently. Being a PS1 version the detail is severely lacking, so sacrificing it to the dremel gods could be a possibility. If she happens to go Santa Fe all the way, ptc, I'll let you know. Bruce

Harry says: "This is a legacy D&RGW 4-8-4 and the customer wanted the color corrected and number boards moved to the correct location. I masked ready to paint, removed the number boards, prepared holes and filled the incorrectly placed ones, and drilled new holes (covered by tape). "

Just the masking (maybe the most important step) would totally defeat me!
