I recently saw a photo of the subject Lionel Santa Fe Northern and decided to try to put together a model of the Wabash #2900 4-8-4 Baldwin-built Northern consisting of the Lionel engine, but with a coal tender vs. the oil tender that comes with the Lionel engine. Photos of the original 2900 appear to be very similar to the Lionel #3751.
Though I have a number of MTH Premier engines, I bought my first Lionel Legacy engine last Christmas and am very happy with it. I decided to try to recreate my version of the coal burning Wabash #2900 because I inherited a Lionel pre-War 226E Hudson (it still runs) from my grandfather which has 2900 hand-painted on the the sides of the tender and a cardboard sign with Wabash in black letters attached to the cab window on the fireman side. He worked on the Wabash his whole career and the 2900 must have had some notable importance.
I am trying to determine if it is possible to match (in terms of electronics, equipment availability, and replication feasibility) a Lionel a coal tender to switch with the oil tender. Any help is appreciated.

I am not able to help with this project but I can offer encouragement. I looked up the Wabash 2900 class and they are very attractive steam engines. Good luck with this project and let up know about your progress. Hopefully someone here will be able to help.

The mating of a Legacy steam engine with a tender from another Legacy steamer is simple as there are no electrical connections. As long as engine and tender drawbars are compatible this form of swap is easy. The biggest issue is finding a suitable Legacy coal tender that replicates 2900 accurately and is for sale individually. Certain Legacy railsounds are loco specific so there's no ability to modify existing crew talk to suit a loco that Lionel did not produce. TMCC and Legacy railsounds in general are not compatible so you're limited to swapping Legacy for Legacy. Transplanting your existing Legacy railsounds into a suitable silent tender would be the most economical swap but still leaves you with incorrect crew and tower talk. The
