For each one of us, the answer is probably different. That is what should make this an interesting thread.
For Elizabeth and I, the answer is satisfaction. The satisfaction of finishing the trian room from a shell, creating the design with a very detailed plan, and building the entire layout ourselves. Then to have the finished product be worthy of Classic Toy Trains to have a front cover feature article about out layout for the December, 2018 edition of CTT. Now that's a lot of satisfaction.
Yes, we also get joy from our layout most every day as we get to run terrific trians in a beautiful setting.
Please share with us your story.

What I get from my layout and running trains is much more then I expected. Its a place to relax at. It brings back memories of trains especially the NYC 10:15, and hearing its horn as I fell asleep on school nights. It brings back memories of a simpler time and childhood.

Also I have time to myself while my WIFE practices on her cello. Along with have friends and family over during the Christmas holidays to run trains. FUN TIME INDEED!!!!

For me it started in the 6th grade when I checked out a model railroad magazine. All I did was day dream about building a model train layout, buildings, people ect.......
I guess it's just a childhood dream coming true.

Great topic Brian. I enjoyed finishing the basement before even having a layout. I made it a comfortable room with good lighting, in anticipation of the layout to come. I cut the benchwork from 3/4” Birch plywood sheets, and assembled L-Girder benchwork with adjustable feet (the basement floor was not so level). I’ve enjoyed building my room and layout from scratch. And I did it alone. Good, bad, or indifferent! I’ve had my share of mistakes, but I’ve been able to overcome them. I’m now building structures and doing scenery. Each time I enter the room, it’s filled with....possibilities. And the layout is built to operate. It’s a point to point layout with a fair share of manual throws. I haven’t run any trains since last year, because I’ve been building, or creating, and I’m ok with that. I look forward to the day when I do start to operate the layout, but I’m in no rush. I lose track of time when I’m downstairs. What more could I ask for?

I guess for me just watching my trains run. It gives me something to do other than, sitting around watching TV. After the accident when I was able to get down the stairs again. Trains became my focus. I get a lot of satisfaction watching them run around the layout. I'm also thinking about adding another 4x5 section at some point.

Every one of the above comments holds a truth for me. Satisfaction, sharing with family, relaxing, being a KING, learning electronics, doing something besides watching TV, etc.
I would add one more, the building of relationships and friendships through my hobby. It has been one of the greatest values for me, to meet and become friends with so many individuals through the forums, York, and my own local group of train enthusiasts. Most of you are my age, have had successful lives and we keep enhancing our lives with our hobby. That is what I get out of my Layout.

Yes and the relationships too. If you were to tell when I was first building my layout that I would belong to a on-line train community or a local club or going to Pennsylvania and meeting more people. I sure I would have not believed that would happen. Not to mention the friendships that have developed.

I have met and conversed with many friends through this hobby, and learned so much in doing so. Still learning new things daily.

The enjoyment of doing it all myself. The people that stop by and cannot believe what I have built (hopefully the new layout is just as good). Most of all it is my escape room. I can go to the traincave shut the door and all the nasty of the day and world go away. Just to see the smoke and her the horns and whistles .... I'm an engineer,a conducter, the president, the ticket person at the station, the store clerk, the farmer or simply the little boy fishing under the bridge.

In hind sight, I would make what Wood has said as reason #1.

To finish it...Going on 10 years now that I cannot seem to finish layout. Everytime I get close I don't like it and start over. Then years later I see photos I posted of it online and ask myself "Why the heck did I start over it looked great?" I think the issue is I am settled on the NYC&HRR 1880-1910 in New York City from GCD to the harlem river. But everytime I see what you and the guys post, I get the urge to do a generic layout and run whatever I want. As soon as my Foam Tac Glue arrives one of 3 things will happen (make sure you take a shot whisky and sit in a firm chair): 1) I re-do the layout the right way for NYC&HRR 2) I leave it as is and make the best of it. 3) I redo the whole thing in N Scale....(passes out on floor and my dogs eat me).

I'd say there's three things that I get/want from my layout. I'll list them first, second and third but I don't think any one of them is more important than the other two.
First, there's the connection to my childhood. Like many of you I grew up with Lionel trains. I got my first set for Christmas 1949 and I was born a week later. Trains were a big part of the magic of Christmas when I was little. They were set up early in December along with the tree and came down around the middle of January. When I was 8 or 9 I build an 8x8 Lionel layout in the basement with my dad. My trains today bring those and other great memories back. They are a bridge from then to now, and that gives me a lot of satisfaction and happiness. I often think of my dad when I'm in the train room. He would have loved the layout.
Second, the layout is my form of creativity. I'm not an artist of any kind and no longer play the guitar but I still have a creative urge. Building a layout satisfies that urge. All the details that make up a layout, the scenes and even the trains themselves are a creative outlet for me. My layout allows me to create in a way I find very satisfying. It's an expression of my vision.
Finally, it's all the friends I've made through trains. I have train friends here in Florida, I have train friends in NY, and I have train friends all over the place through forums like this one. Running trains is great fun, as is creating layouts and scenes, but those things would leave a lot to be desired if I didn't have friends to share them with. All the social activities, hanging with friends, exhibiting a layout at a show or just attending a show with friends makes this great hobby so much better.

For me it’s the endless journey. I started back into the hobby because I needed a distraction for life and work stresses and so far it has been a Godsend. Someone posted on our local Nextdoor social media app that they had some track to give away and that was a sign. It jolted my memory and love of trains from my childhood.
The fact that you are never really done means there is always something to tinker with to take you mind off of anything bothering you.
