Some members join to just observe and read and learn from the comments, pictures and stories of others. Not everyone lives on the internet full time. But they do comment when they feel they are wanted. mrmeep, we value all of our members. When a new member joins and we welcome them with a new thread we hope they feel they are wanted, because they are wanted. We understand that some members read threads but never comment. Different strokes for different folks.😊

I think we've gotten a decent sampling from this poll. I'll keep the poll open through the weekend.

As I have stated before, all good points. However we must remember this is a forum about a hobby. It would be nice if a member would post every now and then. As MRMEEP states above "Some members join to just observe and read and learn from the comments, pictures and stories of others. Not everyone lives on the internet full time. But they do comment when they feel they are wanted." I myself looked at train forums for about two years before I took the plunge and joined one. During that two year period of looking I was able to catch up on the hobby and build a somewhat decent knowledge base. Then I started writing a few posts and gradually began to feel comfortable and posted somewhat more regularly. Mainly due in fact to a particular cast of characters who were on that forum at that time. Now we are all here. YIPPEE KI YAY!! As for living on the internet, I tried that. Didn't work out to well! One thing I know is that a huge number of people use the internet just to garner information or have questions answered. Could be the case here too. I have noticed there have been 55 members respond to the Demographics Thread. A healthy response all things considered. In closing there are a number of us wanting to see a larger contingent of our members post. Is it possible that we may be the issue?? I have noticed now that I belong to a certain age group and I want to enjoy life more and more and leave the BS in the rear view mirror. This struck me like a bolt out of the blue the morning of Friday the 25th of September. It was the first day of my retirement. It was the "click heard around the world". The leash was gone and I chewed the collar off! Cheryl and I organized a small retirement party and we had a great time with close friends on Saturday the 26th. Cheryl told me the next day that I had a permanent smile on my face all day Saturday. It took a while but I finally found my meaning of life. Sometimes it is better to live and let live!!
Regards,
Gary.

Congrats Gary on your retirement. Keep that smile baked on to your face. Nothing better then a great big smile.
Your comments are spot on. We all have different ways of interacting on the internet.

Gary, I don’t think we of this Forum are the issue that a lot of members didn’t respond to this age poll. Some people don’t like to discuss or reveal their age. Me? I don’t care, to me age is just a number. At 63, my joints and muscles remind me often that I’m not 25 anymore, although in my mind I think I am!
And congratulations again on your retirement!! How did that collar taste? LOL!

As 1 of 2 people in the 20 year old bracket, I can say that participating in an online forum can be a bit intimidating. I remember nearly 9 years ago I posted on a forum asking a product question and I got absolutely beat up for asking such a "dumb" question. I was called "ignorant" and told to "Do my research". I was 20 years old at the time, posting on YouTube, and very involved in the hobby. But to be treated that way was a complete turn off.
I asked myself, "Is this how everyone in this hobby acts towards young people and those who are new to model trains?". For the next several years I didn't post anything. Just watched from a distance and stuck with YouTube. And I think there are hundreds if not thousands of people also watching from a distance.
Forums should welcome new people with open arms and kindly answer their questions no matter how fundamental. If we want this hobby to survive and thrive we need to encourage and inspire whenever and wherever we can.

Safe! It wasn’t here.
Fully agree with you. Most of us didn’t know much when we started. A few knew it all then and still do.

"Forums should welcome new people with open arms and kindly answer their questions no matter how fundamental. If we want this hobby to survive and thrive we need to encourage and inspire whenever and wherever we can."Well said, Jason. I have found that the attitude you describe has more to do with arrogant folks who think they are better than anyone else. They have no clue that a forum is a part of "social media" and they do their best to try to outsmart each other. I can think of one guy who stands out in my mind who is a wealth of train knowledge ( does NOT belong to the OGF) but he enjoys cutting what he considers less smart people at the knees. Anybody new, and they don't have to be in the age bracket that you belong to, I think he gets every morning hoping he can attack at his keyboard. These folks would turn anybody off and are complete JERKS. We from the get-go have done our best to promote our youth. Age has absolutely nothing to the way we tastefully and respectfully treat each other. That's why we are so proud to have you as a part of us. You are part of the group and age has nothing to do with it. Adam said it best when he came up with the slogan that appears on our 2021 OGF Club Car.

Yeah - and that sort of treatment by experienced hobbyists is extraordinarily mean/small-minded. It costs nothing to be kind but some people get a sort of satisfaction from mindless bullying. What's worse is seeing people trying to placate or appease them.

Jason, what happened to you was TOTALLY WRONG AND UNCALLED FOR!! So far in my lifetime I have garnered a vast wealth of knowledge and experience. Combine that with an eidetic memory and I feel like I have swallowed the complete set of Encyclopedia Britannica. Never have I been rude to someone who asked me for information about anything. I consider what I have to be a gift and I freely share it with others. As for the plick who shat on you, well simply put, make him a land owner, kick him in the nut$ and give him 2 acres. Sorry, but that is my only response to a$$holes like that. Cheryl is very busy working at home again, but just to let you know she is always asking me what you have been up to. After spending some time with you at York last October we both came away knowing that you are a STAND UP GENTLEMAN who has a lot to offer and not just about model trains. As for the person Brian is talking about...If he said some of the things he has posted to other people to me in person. I would be out a few bucks in bail money!! Sorry for the diatribe folks but I just can't abide people like that. I guess that's why Cheryl keeps a tight rein on me. LOL!
Regards,
Gary.
