Legacy rechargeable batteries. My remote batteries kicked the bucket. I am using Energize lithium batteries to operate. They last for a month and then have to replace them.
My question is, can I buy any AA rechargeable battery or are there differences which could cause a problem? Lionel does not sell replacement batteries.

The batteries in my Legacy remote are made by GP. An online search found them here:
I couldn't find the exact battery (mine are 2400 Ah). These are 2200 Ah, close enough.

Thank you Tom, I'll order these.

Most batteries are made at the same places: China, Japan, and South Korea — in some cases in the same factories—and contain roughly the same components. So nearly all rechargeable batteries will have similar performance.

Wood just the opposite happened to me. The charger in my Cab-2 base quit working so I bought a AA charger and more NiCad batteries. I rotate them use one set while the other is charging. I'm not prepared to buy a new Cab-2 base.

I did use some Lithium batteries for a while and they worked pretty good but went through the batteries pretty quickly. PS have you called the Lionel service center. They can repair the base.

I know, but I'm not in a position to pay for repairs. I'm at the point to just disconnect it and run everything conventionally.

Sadly the charging circuit in the 990 base is of bad design. I purchased a 993 charging base with a second remote and swap out my remotes as they need to be charged. The 993 doesn't get hot, the remote doesn't get hot and the batteries are still good after many years.
Side note, far as I know Lionel is still fixing Legacy remote/base for free

Side note, far as I know Lionel is still fixing Legacy remote/base for free That's good to know, I was thinking of getting a 993 so both grandsons could run trains at the same time. Now I definitely will. The last time I charged my remote with the 990 base, the batteries were hot and the base showed two red charging lights. I didn't look up the error code but assumed it meant that the batteries were too warm to charge. After I let the remote cool, it charged successfully.
