I am a big fan of train shows. Though some, I just walk the halls and go home empty. But, it is always nice to find something at a train show to add to your collection. The real benefit is the folks you get to meet at these shows.
Case in point, for many years, I attended the monthly Dupage Train Show in the Chicago area. We made it a special event. I organized a pre-meet breakfast and we met at 7:00 AM at a local restaurant. What a wonderful way to share a good breakfast with train friends. We then moved to the train show where we met many more friends.
At one of the Dupage shows, Chugman came looking for me in the aisles of the main hall. He said, "did you see the Sante Fe drumhead". Somehow I had misssed it, but immediately made a b-line to the vendor's table. There it was, a gorgious Sante Fe Chief. Fortunately, the show had just started and I scoffed it up immediately. Never forgot that special Sunday morning.
The drumhead is very impressive and is nicely placed on a wall in our living room. It is quite the cionversation piece.
Train shows, yes. Friends and train equipment, what could be better.

Great story, Brian! Always seeing friends at Trains shows is the best especially when you find nothing at the show.

Absolutely beautiful drum head Brian!! I have been trying to find a company that makes replicas of these items. i don't know for certain but I imagine the real ones go for big dollars today.

The drumhead is a great story, Brian.
Of course, I go to train shows to find treasures at good prices, but a big part of the fun is getting together with train friends at shows. I have attended shows for years now as an exhibitor with my club. In NY my club has O, HO and N traveling layouts. Now that I live in Florida I've joined the Vero Beach Model Railroaders and we have O and HO traveling layouts. Here in Florida I've gotten to know some of the other exhibitors and look forward to seeing them at the next show.
