I found this photo of the station in town. Can any one tell me what type of engine this is?

I'm not 100% sure but it looks like an EMD E8.

I'm not 100% sure but it looks like an EMD E8. It's either an E8 or an E9. Both have the porthole windows and grill structure above the windows.

After blowing up the photo I would say the engine is an EMD E9. My reason for saying this is due to the more upright angle on the side and shorter blunter appearance of the engine front under the windscreen. The color of the loco may be dark green...hard to tell from the sunlight and the angle. Could be blue.
Just My Thoughts,
Gary.

I agree with the others on the model. Also from what's left of the lettering it was a New York Central unit.

Did the NYC ever own any E9s? I haven't done much looking but one diesel roster for the RR that I found in a quick Google search only showed E8s. If that's the case, then that's probably what's in the photo.

It is a NYC E8 and it looks like a station on the old New York and Long Branch. Penn Central era as the NYC engine is pulling PRR P70 coaches...
Almost looks like Matawan...

I had to look a couple times as I thought it was old PC lettering. The engine does appear to have blue on the upper sides. It might be some “DOT Blue” . The E8s used by PC/Conrail/NJDOT on the NY&LB were, for the most part, pretty ratty. Some received the DOT scheme shortly before the creation of NJTransit, but most were still in PRR/PC colors right up until they were placed on the inactive roster. The New York and Long Branch was also 1/2 owned by the Central Railroad of NJ. The CNJ equipment was a bit better when it came to looks and reliability. They ran passenger service along with the PC right up until Conrail was formed...then it all became one service... Tom

Great shot. I grew up in that area of NJ. Had family in Matawan. I love historical photos like these.

They had some pretty crusty engines on the NY&LB! South Amboy engine terminal, an old PRR/PC facility. I worked there some 35 years ago...like 20 years after this photo was taken.. Tom
