So during the boating season, my layout remained largely idle. I unplugged my transformer and Legacy 990 just in case of a power surge during that time. I hooked everything back up this week and after a regular cleaning of the track and engines, only had one issue. I noticed that the 990 base will not the enter green full charge mode. It did before its slumber, but not now. Could it be that the batteries need replacing in the remote? They are the original NiCads. I did inspect them and the terminals, and everything looks fine, and the remote shows fully charged.

The charging circuit is about the only major issue the seems to plague Legacy. I turned my charger off long ago and use alkaline or lithium batteries.

I haven't had a issue with mine so far, but you might want to go with alkaline or lithium batteries. The rechargeable batteries can be pricey.

That sounds like a battery issue if the remote otherwise functions as it should. The original NiCads for these sets could have sat on a shelf for, well, years.
Without going into unnecessary detail, in your position I'd either replace the batteries OR (as I have myself done) turn off the charger and use conventional non-recharge batteries.

I use regular energizer batteries and I have notice even when the remote is off there is some parasitic drain that will cause them to go dead in about 8-10 weeks.

The 990 base should come with a warning stating don't use it for charging. I've purchased a 993 ad on and use that to charge both my remotes. The 993 base doesn't get hot and I've had not had any issues.

I second all the above.......just use Alkalines instead of charging. But make sure your Legacy charger is switched to off, tape over charging contacts (just to be sure) and remove batteries if you expect your layout will be idle for a period of time.

Try a new set of batteries. If the problem goes away, it was the batteries. If the problem persists, it's the charging circuit in the Legacy command base. Lionel has extended the warranty on the charging circuit. If it has gone bad, they will repair it at no cost.
My Legacy base evidenced the same problem after working fine during 10 years of regular use. To be absolutely sure if the batteries were the problem, I tried two new sets. The problem remained. I called Lionel and they took care of it. No problem since.

So if I understand correctly (I own an 990) it seems that the 990 gets hot. I do NOT use mine to charge the batteries as I heard of this before I purchased it. Now I would like a second remote for it so is it best to buy the 993 and use it as a charger charging both remotes in it's cradle? I would continue to use the cradle as a storage cradle for the 990. Is that the thing to do?
