Cavalier has pretty much always meant to me our supposedly hated rivals, the University of Virginia. But about a year and a half ago, we came to find out that it was also the name of an N and W passenger train.
Uh oh... and Lionel was offering it and the J in five different styles. This was just after we returned an entire set of Polar Express cars because Lionel had messed them up; Christmas presents all. So we did not order. Can’t trust Lionel.
Fast forward to pre-Christmas 2019 and, sure enough, Lionel messed it up again (not the second time but the third; we also received a miscolored Polar Express APO car that remains incorrect). We were toasting the decision to evade the debacle with fresh egg nog when the phone rang. Harry Heike.
”Merry Christmas Harry to you and Vicki.”
”Merry Christmas to you and Paula.”
Harry built our N and W passenger station so eventually the topic of the J and passenger cars came up.
”Bill I have some of those engines to correct. Despite the color problem, this is one of the nicest engines I have ever seen Lionel make. Are you getting one?”
Okay, Harry would not mislead us. Got on the phone and, wouldn’t you know it, a J for each of us.
Fast forward again... “Bill I am sending you a picture. A customer asked me to fix these for him. Call me after you get it.”
There in all its infamy, a miscolored Cavalier passenger car. I felt a little queasy when I called back.
”Bill despite some problems, this can be a very nice passenger set. And the money should be right to get a deal. Here’s what we can do.”
So, that’s how come we have a set of Cavalier cars that we have never seen in Mt Ephraim, New Jersey. Just a few changes are being made such as:
Repaint to the correct color
Remove and replace the window frames and the green tinted windows
Paint and weather the roofs of the cars
Weather the remainder of the consist
Add seat backs with Cavalier logo
Add passengers
Upgrade the dining car
Furnish the combo car
Things are well underway
Decals have arrived
Molds have been made for new window frames
Seat backs and passengers have been added
Cars and roofs have been painted. No weathering yet.
The combo car is partially furnished
We will keep everyone posted.
