I am the bearer of good news, the maximum size for photos has been raised to 10MB. Our programming guru thinks we will be OK with large photos but is working on an alternative should we have problems.
Since we are new we are bound to have some unforeseen problems but they will be corrected ASAP.

Our programmer sent me this regarding photo size:
"The forum does not have the ability to auto-compress image files in posts. (The problem is that an auto-compressor can degrade images without user-input).
We are currently allowing 10MB file uploads, but this will max out the server storage if a lot of large images are uploaded. The forum users should strongly consider external image compression to UNDER 1 MB in size. In addition to allowing members to control the image quality in compressions, this will make the forum posts load faster.
I would encourage users to compress their images for a great user-experience in page-load speed. There are dozens of FAST online compressors."
I don't know diddly about online photo compressors but I will do a little research. In the mean time please try to keep photos on the smaller side so we don't max out server storage.

I just uploaded some random photos to this site: imagecompressor.com
This is the result:
It was easy and quick. The largest photo is 1.45MB and the smallest is 299KB. The original sizes varied with the largest being about 4.5MB. This was much easier than resizing photos manually. It literally took a couple of minutes to upload, resize and download these photos.
