Very good question Jason! I have been looking at different brands and styles off and on for when we build our layout. There are lots of choices out there. One type I recommend to go with are the type that can be controlled by a sliding dimmer switch. Also for the pot lights as well. By the way, your basement looks great!
All The Best,
Gary and Cheryl.

Jason, These fixtures were purchased from Home Depot. They are available in Black or White. I like them because you can place individual lights in different locations, they have snapin electric connections so you can rotate them 360 degrees and slide left or right. Each section will support 4 lights. I used dimable LED bulbs. Relatively inexpensive. I do not have a flat ceiling, they are designed to be placed on a flat ceiling surface. I had to add spacers to keep them balanced. PS. You are looking at a 130 year old structural Hemlock in a stone walled basement. Yes it is dry.

Rocky Mountaineer David and Bill Webb have done extensive research on layout lighting. I hope they see this thread and chime in.

No track lighting here. Just basement ceiling lights. Or, no lights. Or, you could always finish the ceiling with inlaid or fluorescent lighting where ever you want it. Never was a fan of the track lighting, but I’m probably in the minority.

Howdy Jason,
I was in the lighting design business for several years. Retired just as LED's were taking over but I did work with them quite a bit. Two manufacturers of residential lighting that you might look at are Progress Lighting and Juno Lighting. There are others for sure. Kirchler is another now that I think of it. One of these might be handled by Lowes etc. I would look for physically small fixtures. The less up there the better. If you are putting the track on 7 foot centers you should have good spacing.

Home Depot / Lowes have all purpose track fixtures. I purchased the LED snap in spots as needed. I use 2700K bulbs for the best effect.

If you're willing to spend a few bucks, check out Philips HUE lights. They're smart multi-color LED's that can be programmed and controlled with your iPhone or iPad. I use a combination of BR30 floods and PAR16 spots. They'll work with a variety of track light head units. These lights allow you to create an endless array of special effects, and they're particularly effective when creating night scenes. Here are a few nighttime examples....

Jason we have the same lights and have been pleased. We control ours more with Alexa than the I-phone/pad. That will probably change when we get things closer to being completed.
David have you had any lights burn out? I saw one of ours out the other day but haven’t checked it out yet.
What is the large building on your layout.? Back shop? It looks neat.
Jason these lights are not cheap. We got ours at a Best Buy and waited for a sale. We checked daily until it happened. Around holidays is a good time. The lights can be used to create scenes on the layout such as sunrise or sunset. We played with them some when we first got the lights but have not taken the time to do it recently.
If we were to do this again, we would probably recess some LED tube lights to use for work lights and use the Phillips strictly when running. I have to think that at some point they will begin to fade and require replacement.
We got the mounting hardware from a California company that Doug (Laidoffsick) recommended. I can get you the info if you want. David knows a lot more than I do about this.

Thank you Wood and Brian. Nothing elaborate, but a finished, carpeted basement and a comfortable place for running trains and for the grandkids to play. 😉
