My K-Line EP5 arrived today. It is in a Great Northern paint scheme. The GN never had any and I plan on stripping it for my project. Going from this... to this... It has Lionel TMCC and it was very cheap. It looks like it is brand new. The Penn Central inherited the EP5s from the New Haven when they merged. Their use was restricted due to fires, so the PC rebuilt them into E40s. They removed one pan, the third rail shoes and the steam heater system. They ended up being stripped down freight engines. Here are the parts that will be discarded... I started by taking apart the shell. I removed one pan and the adjacent electrical conduit. I also removed the small pan and the third rail shoes, made easy by screw mountings. I removed all the glass, headlights and number boards. The model is easy to work with as all the electrical connections use plugs and sockets. Finally, I removed the etched grills from the sides. So now the body is ready to be stripped. I am going to try Scale Coat plastic paint remover. just waiting for that to arrive... This is the basic form of the modified engine. I will be adding extra handrails to the roof and the cab sides..

I agree with Vern, this is indeed an ambitious project, but you are more than up to it, Tom.

Thank you, men.
I think the hard part is going to be the paint stripping. Once I have a good base, the rest is fairly easy. It just takes time.
Penn Central seems under represented. It was a railroad that was big when I was a kid. There doesn’t seem to be much offered out there in O scale.
Hopefully I will get the stripper this week and then go to town on this project!

Tom, are you going to leave the pantograph on for stripping and painting?

No. It will be painted separately. Same with the side grills ...these parts will not be stripped as they are dark green and the black will cover them nicely..
