I have been on the hunt for the past several months for appropriate vehicles to fill the City streets in order to give us the look of 5:00 PM rush hour in NYC. Our main focus is the 50's. I have learned a great deal in this process from all of the research about vehicles that fit well with O-Gauge layouts. One thing I learned about me is I seem to be particualrly drawn to Oldsmobiles and Buicks that I remember well as a kid. They seem to epitomize the very best of the 50's.
In my search, I recently came across a 1953 Oldsmobile with a matching boat and trailer. They are stunning models. But, we model with winter scenery, so it would be somewhat of a stretch to include them. There comes a time when you just have to throw what may be appropriate "to the wind". This was one of the best 1:43 scale car & boat combos that I had ever seen, so it was an easy decision to add them to our inventory.
I rationalized putting them on 42nd Street that they were heqded to the City's annual Boat Show, so the season made no difference.
Have you done something similar when something may not have fit perfectly with your layout theme, but you added it anyway?

Brian, I think that describes my entire layout. I’m not really modeling a particular place, era or style. I add what I like. That may change in future layouts though.

We also have a large collection of Department 56 'Christmas In The City' buildings, so the future layout will be a Christmas/big city theme. But one summer while walking the boardwalk in Wildwood, NJ, I was inside a store that had 1:50 sized vehicles really cheap. Amongst the ones I bought were a couple cool looking 'woodies' with surfboards on the roof. I'll just pretend they're on their way to Florida, or California beaches. Cowabunga, dudes!!

Brian, That is such a beautiful picture and model. Your road work is excellent. Yes, I do have some odd pieces on my layout. Most are memories for me of different points in my journey.

That’s a superb set and whatever the theme it should be display.
Basically I have the same idea about rolling stock. I have complete passenger trains but the other cars I get don’t follow any historical theme but are just what I like and have got on impulse, thinking they’d be entertaining on the track.

My layout is mostly set in the 1950-1968 period but I have vehicles that don't fit such as Hummers. I got 4 of them, 2 yellow and 2 black, as freebies from Menards. They are lighted and pretty cool so they are on the layout. I have no explanation why they are there other than that I like them, and that's good enough for me. No visitor thus far has mentioned that they are out of place. I also have an FEC pickup truck that is a contemporary model and definitely out of place on the layout. The only reason it's there is because I live in Florida and see FEC trains all the time. When I run more modern trains I don't change out vehicles. My layout is a toy train layout and only suggests reality so I'm not concerned with everything fitting into a given time period. If it looks good or appeals to me it's on my layout.

Me too, Joe. Two on the layout and one in the driveway.

My layout is no specific time. If I like it I buy it and find the spot to put it on my layout

Very happy that Bill Webb likes this addition so well. And no Bill, CT Balsam has nothing yo do with it. But, CT is very grateful to Bill as he has made him world famous.

Gary, because of his extensive boating experience, Admiral Bill may be a better fit. I bet he would love to be at the helm of this boat headed to the City's Annual Boat Show.
