Don, you have a very nice collection of vehicles from the period you are modeling. This is very well done. Makes your train station pop.

One of our improvement projects for the layout this year was to increase the density factor for the City streets. We wanted the City streets to look more like New York City would appear at rush hour. More taxi cabs was a primary focus, but the more we got into this project, we needed a variety of vehicles to accomplish the "look" we were going for. Of particular improvement is the area from the sidewalks on 42nd Street (the street on the first level) to the railroad tracks. These before and after photos show what we have accomplished (so far, as we are not completely done with this project).

That is a huge improvement, Brian. Streets loaded with vehicles barely moving is normal for New York City. 👍

I am going to be increasing my vehicle budget , they help improve a layout. I might go for some of the Menards lighted ones, I like layouts with lots of lights. Menards lighted vehicles are great. All my lighted cars and trucks are from Menards. Sometimes they have lighted vehicles as freebies with a purchase. You can buy a lighted vehicle and get one free, two for the price of one.

I have recently noticed OGF member posts of scenes on their layouts that include vehicles. Joe Saggese, Country Joe and Charlie come to mind. These members have cleverly integrated vehicles into various scenes, making their layouts much more realistic and interesting.
This is a subject of particular interest to me as over the past three months I have done extensive research to find vehicles that match the 50's that we model. We had many spaces to fill to obtain the density factor we wanted for our 42nd Street and the related parking spaces. I have to admit that this project has been time consuming, but a lot of fun learning what is available that fits the scale and time frame. Our project has matured since I started as with the nice models I had accumulated over the years added to some new ones, I came up with the idea of creating a Car Show that is designed to highlight these exceptional vehicles.
Please tell us how you use vehicles on your layouts. You might find my article "Accurately Representing Automobiles in 1950s America" in the March / April (Issue #102) of O Scale Trains magazine of interest. I included a break-down of vehicle make and type that might help. George

Most of my vehicles are from Menards. Others I picked up at York.

Don't forget about busses too! When I was a kid, I'd play with buses I would get from Woolworths and similar stores during the summer until the trains were put up after Thanksgiving. Just an extension of my love for passenger equipment!
