I have recently noticed OGF member posts of scenes on their layouts that include vehicles. Joe Saggese, Country Joe and Charlie come to mind. These members have cleverly integrated vehicles into various scenes, making their layouts much more realistic and interesting.
This is a subject of particular interest to me as over the past three months I have done extensive research to find vehicles that match the 50's that we model. We had many spaces to fill to obtain the density factor we wanted for our 42nd Street and the related parking spaces. I have to admit that this project has been time consuming, but a lot of fun learning what is available that fits the scale and time frame. Our project has matured since I started as with the nice models I had accumulated over the years added to some new ones, I came up with the idea of creating a Car Show that is designed to highlight these exceptional vehicles.
Please tell us how you use vehicles on your layouts.

Seems like a vehicles thread appears here about every couple of months. Again, I took out a storage track awhile back and replaced it with a parking lot for the vehicles which the grandkids like to play with on top of the adjacent covered pool table when they get tired of running the trains.

I consider vehicles, along with buildings and people, an important part of a layout. They create a lot of visual interest and set the time period more than any other accessories.
I generally place my vehicles in places where it's logical that they are standing still. Parking lots and parking spaces are great places to show off lots of vehicles. I also place them at stop signs and grade crossings, at houses and any other place where they would be standing still.
Oh, and don't forget they make great loads on freight cars.

I have eight VW Beetles I bought to fill out a German DB auto carrier. That is pretty much all I have purchased since I started in O scale. I do have a 1/50 scale collection of cranes, construction vehicle And fire engines that I hope to use on a layout in the future. I also have a collection of Corgi military stuff. Mostly around 1/50 scale... Tom

Joe, what a wonderful collection of vehicles.
I also have one of those 1953 Buick Skylark convertibles.

Thanks Brian. None of my cars are expensive models but I really enjoy them. My collection is small compared to yours. I think you have more Taxi Cabs than I have total vehicles.
The Buick is one of my favorite cars. I loved Buicks when I was little. I imagined the portholes on the side were machine gun ports and pressing the horn fired the guns. I imagined myself driving a Buick, taking part in automobile dogfights, firing the guns and "shooting down" enemy cars.

I am going to be increasing my vehicle budget , they help improve a layout. I might go for some of the Menards lighted ones, I like layouts with lots of lights.

I sure agree with you. I have collected Buicks as well, most of them from the 50's.The blue and white convertible is one of my favorites.

Cars, trucks and buses make a scene look complete.

Oh yes, vehicles are an essential detail that makes the layout more interesting. My favorite area on my layout is the village where various vehicles line the street.
