Lets continue the favorite's series this week with your Favorite Vintage Engine. I use the word vintage to allow for a broader set of options. For some this could be a pre or post war engine and for others it could be something from a later decade. But, in your eyes it needs to be vintage or old! Just as important as what is your favorite is why it is your favorite. Tell us the story of how you acquired it, what makes it special to you and, if you are so inclined, show us a video of it running. For me, it is this humble early 1980's vintage engine. Santa brought this to me for Christmas when I was 9 years old after a couple of years of asking. I was finally a good enough boy to receive it. It is the engine from a James Gang Train Robbery set (I have most of the cars). As any young boy, I abused the heck out of this train and it has certainly seen better days. I remember staging train wrecks with it. Recently, I replaced some parts with 3D printed equivalents, but of course some work is still needed. It was also converted with the help of a rectifier to run on AC. It is my first train and will always be special to me. I will run it later today and take a short video to share. So what is your favorite vintage or old Locomotive or Engine and why is it special to you?

Didn't we do this before. My answers still the same. First electric Marx 999, then 2025 and 2344. in the order received. In the early 70s the black & gold N.P. GP and the U36 Spirit of 76 really got me goin again.

Since I got back into O gauge in 2014 and started from scratch I don't have any old locomotives. All are newer with modern electronics so I'll consider vintage as an older locomotive type, and that would be the Commodore Vanderbilt. New York Central 5344 was the last J1E Hudson built and the first streamlined in 1934, and while that's notable it's not why it's my favorite. It later became a Dreyfuss Hudson and I like that streamlining better, but when I was little I had a pre-war Lionel Commodore Vanderbilt 2-4-2 locomotive and 3 passenger cars that my dad found in someone's garbage. It had been played with hard by it's previous owner. It was scratched and had no E-unit so it only ran forward, but it was my only passenger train and was special to me.
When I saw this Railking Commodore Vanderbilt I had to get it. It is definitely my favorite "vintage" locomotive.

For me, it's the 1950 773 Hudson. Being a postwar head, I yearned for one for years. Solid postwar construction, scale size and the aesthetics of a JIE. Around 5 years ago, an entire set with the correct silhouetted Madison cars showed up at a local Lionel dealer. The condition was just what I was looking for and the patina on the cars was a perfect match. With sweaty palms, it took it bit of a push for me to pull the trigger but once I did I raced home with the set and watched it go in circles for hours.

Would love to see it run if you have the ability to share a video.

It would have to be the Marx Battery operated train set I got from my parents when they must not have yet trusted me with "electricity". It also the oldest personal toy I have saved. I ran it about a year ago to see if it still ran and it did with the idea of selling it. But it still has a place on my top shelve displayed. I believe I've shown this before.

There it was sitting in a hobby shop display case. Having grown up in NP territory as a child, I was awestruck.

It's the Lionel 2037 for me, too. I received this set, The Cleartrack Special, from Santa for Christmas 1955. Had it restored about 4 years ago and it now runs just as good as it did 65 years ago.

The only vintage stuff I have is a set of OO Lionel trains including the Hudson locomotive and about 10 cars and track. It belonged to my Grandfather.
I have it stored at the moment....

Without a doubt, my favorite vintage loco is the prewar Lionel 763E Hudson. It runs like a Swiss watch, it's beautiful, and at almost 80 years old, it's a survivor.
