This time I used a little different approach. Last year, I noticed that Model Tech Studios was selling an aging solution for plastic and metal cars. I have used many things from them, including their aging solution for wood. So I made a mental note to look into this when I actually started weathering.
Recently, I went back to their website to get it so I could try it. I could not find it. I did find some on Amazon and ordered from there.
The photo of a car aged with this solution is impressive, but I found it impossible to get the same results. Perhaps this is why it is no longer sold there. The package contained the aging solution and a rust solution. The aging solution is, I think, similar to Walter's "black wash." The results of one coat are subtle. I think it would take a lot of precise applications to get the results shown in the photo. The rust solution is the opposite. A very little goes a long way.
I picked two cars to work with. One is a Lionel cheap reefer. Bright orange with a bright white roof. Totally plastic looking. I used two coats of the aging solution and then some touchup work. The results are OK in that the brightness is toned down and the car looks less plastic. In all, a marginally acceptable result...

The second car is a nice little Boraxo hopper. I didn't mind using this car because it has a factory error. The B is missing on one side. This one I used the aging solution, again two coats with some touch ups. I also used the rust solution. The results of the rust solution were not good. I took a damp paper towel and wiped away most of it leaving some in the spots I wanted to rust. I am happy with the results. It looks pretty tired, but no more so than the photo I was working from.

after rust
I may use these again, but I could rust all my rolling stock with this and still have half the bottle left over.
