This just arrived in the mail. It is a Cleveland Union Terminal P2 electric locomotive. The CUT operated in and around Cleveland center where the union station, used by a number of railroads, was located. In the steam era, the city prohibited steam locomotives from being used in the terminal, so the area was electrified. When diesels took over, the electric system was rendered obsolete and dismantled. The NYCRR, the majority owner in the CUT, acquired the engines and converted them to third rail operation for use between Croton Harmon, NY and Grand Central Terminal in NYC. They were retired in the 1960s and all were cut up for scrap. This model is a MTH PS3 engine. It is long! I need to straighten some of the handrails that were bent in shipping. It came from MrMuffin’sTrains.... Tom

Interesting. I don’t think I have ever seen one of those before. Share some video of it running when you get to it. I’m curious to see it run.

Tom that is quite an engine. Looks like MTH did a nice job. I know nothing about electrics; hopefully you do. Friday I came across this picture of what I think are two electrics owned by the Virginian. Any idea what they are? Thanks, Bill

Thanks guys! I like the clunky mechanical look of these heavy electrics. Adam, once I get a layout up! The model runs off the rails or the pantograph for power. I didn’t notice the mis-applied “panto-track” switch label showing underneath. I will have to move it. Some of you may recognize the Cleveland Union Station tower as it appeared in the movie “A Christmas Story” by Jean Shepherd, in the parade scene with Ralphie...when they went to Higbees Dept Store... Friday I came across this picture of what I think are two electrics owned by the Virginian. Any idea what they are? Thanks, Bill Bill, They are Virginian EL3-As, built by Alco/Westinghouse and there were 36 of them. They were acquired around 1925. They were the first electrics owned by the VGN Ry. Interesting that the photo is backward. I noticed the small window on the caboose (where the toilet room is) was on the wrong side...then I noticed the number board in front...still a cool picture though! Tom
