1. Design 2. actual build-out 3. upgrading once the layout is built (never really finished)
Where are you at with the three stages listed above? We are in catagory # 3 for sure with regular ongoing improvement projects.

Spooky Town is about done, Christmas Village is in progress and Main Street is in the planning stage.
Like everything - I need time to work on it - working at Mom's and making sure she is ok I rarely have time as of late to see my trains let alone run 'em
Spooky Town is Halloween/Fall Christmas Village is Christmas/Winter Main Street is Spring Summer
AND you will see NO Chevy's on my layout - maybe a Ford or two - strictly MoPar City.....

I'd say I fall somewhere between 1 and 2. I design as I build. I tried to draw up a plan and build from it but it just didn't work.

#3. Upgrading with changes. Still at standstill with designs for what I want added, removed yet still have my initial reason behind my layout. !-Switching and setting up consist. 2-Have passenger service running. 3-Reasons behind running freight service with industries that will need loaded cars replaced with empties.
4- Add CO-OP Grain Elevator. 5-Farm implement center 6-re-orient the town and buildings.
You might say I'm at #1 again.

One and two. Most of level one track work is done and is working well. The passenger yard remains an enigma as you know and we haven’t decided what to do. We need to be able to back up cars and some are not working despite the large radius. Need to spend some time and determine what works and what does not. The problem may be that a couple of engines are not going to work which is not a big deal. They didn’t do that in Roanoke either.
The freight yard works great and the touch toggle problem has been resolved. The rest of level one tracks are fine and need 10’ of ballast.
We have started level two, right side, which is diesel and steam service. The virus stopped some of that since we have limited outside contact so no extra help. So we have been working on the turntable and roundhouse. That will take months to complete and my helper started her own Christmas tree skirt project since school is out. She will help when it is time to paint.
It’s almost time to switch back to doing more planning for the left side of level 2 and 3. Steve Nelson told us not to worry about level three except for basic ideas since it will be mostly bridges connecting mountains and hills.
We are not sure that we will ever get to stage three given our ages. It will be fun trying.

Theoretically and idealistically yes, 3 stages. But how about adding a #4: Built out and completed with no room for expansion? That’s where mine is.

I guess I am at stage 3. But I have been there before, only to tear down and fall back to Stage 1. I do think, for this layout, this is likely the final iteration. Next would need to be a larger layout to do what I want to.

There's always the living room, Adam.

I am at stage 3. The layout is finished but there are many upgrades that will keep me busy for years to come.
