Most of the permanent layouts are either large/massive enough to accommodate a number of different vignettes/themes such as residential/industrial/retail/country/urban to tell a story or establish a specific space or place in time. For special occasions such as Christmas or Halloween, the permanent layout may simply run a holiday themed train, or add holiday decorations to the existing structures just like in real life.
What I am pondering is a little different and likely a lot more difficult/labor intensive.
The idea is to have a base line (for want of a different term) layout component of a town, residential area, commercial area and have the other section(s) of the layout be convertible to Christmas/Halloween or AEC. It was really the AEC that got me thinking about this as how do you integrate that kind of a theme into conventional layout?
I did this sort of thing Halloween and Christmas wise last year on a temporary layout but it was very labor intensive especially the switch over from Halloween to Christmas. The idea of having a more modest sized permanent layout of the base theme to which you add portions in a semi modular basis that is scratch built so to speak with every switch of themes has occurred to me.
Has anyone done or thought about doing something like this who would like to comment?

Haven't actually done it (yet!), but a while back I contemplated having swappable and interchangeable modules, each decorated in a seasonal mode. Essentially, the layout would be the same year round, but the landscaping would appear to follow the seasons. In theory, this would require three times the size of the layout for storing the out-of-season modules, so it's not a very practical idea, but it would be a head turner for the unsuspecting repeat visitor!

I would just build a layout in the size that fits your other interests. It doesn't have to be huge to have a good time. Design it so you can change it to whatever you want. The whole point of the trains is to have fun!!! Life is too short, have some fun now, you will not regret it!!

I don't have any experience with making theme or occasion layouts. But what comes to mind that may suit your purposes is to have a layout split into quarters to represent each season. For the Fall and Winter sections, make it so you can do Halloween and Christmas and convert them back to regular scenes. I don't know how you would make physical transitions between seasons - or if that is necessary at all. Alfred
