I don’t think you’ll take it in the shorts for a bit of thread-drift here, but you’re right, we should stay on topic.
My interest is primarily in the prewar stuff, before they transitioned to the diecast locos. I really like the stuff that is stamped steel, even better if lithographed. There is a lot of art and design ingenuity in these things.

I'll second that...great link. Now in my bookmark folder. Thanks for sharing, Mopac.
With my prewar steamer search now focused on 259/261/262s, it brings up a question about switches (turnouts). My Christmas O27 layout has postwar #1024 manual switches. I've read conflicting information about driver wheel flange depth between O and O27 locomotives. Some claim the flange depth is identical while others say O gauge locomotives have deeper flanges.
So...will an O gauge locomotive derail when crossing a #1024 O27 switch?

I've not had issues with flange-depth while running O-27 track on floor layouts or the inside loop on the basement layout, but I have had issues with stuff passing through O-27 turnouts, usually involving the stands, even with Lionel gear. The Marx stuff can't seem to handle the frog clearances. On our basement layout, we used O-gauge tubular throughout (except on the inner loop which is O-27). The outer O-gauge loop of the mainline features no turnouts; the inner loop of the mainline has two prewar O-21 manual turnouts: All of the Lionel prewar and postwar stuff runs safely through these two turnouts; the Flyer and Ives stuff does as well, although there can be some occasional bumpiness depending on the direction. I don't even try to run Marx stuff through them. We purposely kept the number of turnouts to a minimum with the objective of mitigating these sorts of issues. Anything with suspected turnout issues we run on the outer-loop of the mainline.

With the prewar tinplate itch needing to be scratched, I was on the lookout for old stuff at a local train show yesterday. A little postwar but zero prewar. A good amount of modern O gauge, some S gauge AF, and a ton of HO. What I did come home with is a set of #042 O gauge manual turnouts in very good condition, with original box, for $15. One bulb even works!
Found a lot of very clean of vintage O gauge tubular, enough straights and 31" curves for the Christmas layout, on eBay for $25. So for minimal cost, I can move from O27 to O if necessary. The thought has cross my mind about having an inner O27 and outer O gauge layout for Christmas 2025.
