Just received from Pats Trains 2 of the RMT woodside reefers, they are fantastic looking. You have to ask yourself how in the world can these super detailed reefers be manufactured, shipped from the other side of the planet, then distributed to the dealers with a price of $30. Been running them on the layout for a few days now, no issues with the couplers or tracking through Gargraves or Ross switches. Bill

Bill THAT is a very pertinent question Bill - I have no idea what the answer is but it does make me very resentful about Lionel's four figure-prices for flawed products, and I don't mean just in color schemes.
Anyway, in the past K-Line made many reefers that were quality products and illustrated in ways that appeal to me. The selection below includes one recent MTH car and there's no prize for guessing which it is.

Easy, pure greed by Lionel and others jacking the price on their products. The paint on those cars is incredible

A Pat's box just arrived and while not a Pat's custom run (according to the end flap anyway) the Pink Elephant Ale car is a hoot.

That hasn't been the case for everyone. And the ORE CARS appear to be a complete crapshoot in terms of operational quality. That's been my experience. So I've pushed the pause-button on RMT rolling stock until this mess gets sorted out.
I fortunately live about 30 minutes from Hennings Trains. So I've been able to check in with them on these issues, without SHIPPING stuff back to distant dealers. But on occasion, it's necessary to order from afar for some of the custom-runs of other dealers. I know most of the RMT dealers pretty well from other purchases over the years. So they're all good to work with... and they're standing by the products they sell.
But I can see how these are only $30-$35 products. We get what we pay for. And while it's tough to shell out $80-$100+ per car for other pieces of rolling stock by other importers, I agree there should be a "happy medium" of sorts where we're not blatantly paying for the excessive overheads of some companies that have gotten WAY out of control.

Harborbelt70, I also have that SP Apache Trail boxcar, very cool graphics.
For pricing of current rolling stock, seems like Lionel, MTH, and Atlas have been charging excessive prices for their product line to help subsidize the production of their big buck steamers and diesels. Lionel has no problem charging $50 or more for traditional type rolling stock that would be a $25 offering from Menards. But there apparently are plenty of customers that will pay the higher price for that orange & blue box.
For some reason Menards and RMT have issues with some of their diecast truck / coupler. From my experience the gauging of the wheel sets are not to perfection which causes derailments. Who ever manufactures the truck assembly does not take the time to inspect the distance between the two wheels. Most are OK, some are crap.

Couldn't help but notice that on the Old Indian Brewing Co car, RMT chose to use the secondary spelling of 'Pilsner', which is mostly used outside of the US. Either they did this intentionally ( ?), or they pulled a Lionel and got REALLY lucky....

If one wants to buy the overpriced trains that's fine with me. BUT I give Menards and RMT a thumbs up for bringing affordable trains to the marketplace. Don't nit-pick. It seems that issues brought forward have for the most part been dealt with. If you are not liking the product, buy the expensive ones.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if RMT owns the tooling that is being used to produce the item they are selling.Or is this some other companies tooling.
I doubt that Menards owns any of the tooling that is being used. You can always sell an item cheaper if you don't have an investment in the tooling
