I bought a Blue Comet 400E by MTH, sell says has never been run, He showed good picks of the pick-up wheels and the rest of the wheels. they all show no marks at all.
My question would it be safe to test it with original battery or should I get new one and replace it first.

Thanks I was thinking that, I have a equivalent to a BCR coming in. ( Tenergy Centura 9V NIMH Rechargeable )

I do a lot of preventive maintenance for a guy that buys collections and then sells. I go through his engines he buys and always change the batteries before applying any power. It's a good move. While I am no expert, I've seen too many people recommend this.

Thanks I was thinking that, I have an equivalent to a BCR coming in. ( Tenergy Centura 9V NIMH Rechargeable ) Only thing I’ll add to the other fella’s good suggestions, is to check the voltage of the charged battery before installation. I’ve had a couple PS2 & PS1 engines sent in with NiMh batteries that were way too low, and of course, I ask the client, and he/she assumed it was charged.

I may be mistaken, but I thought just putting the PS1 loco on the track with power on would recharge it? Unfortunately that doesn't work if the battery is dead. So removing the battery for charging, or replacing with a BCR or known good battery is probably the more sensible approach, if a lot more effort, with an engine new to you.

Changing battery is worth it 100%, but a bit of a task, as it is not easily obtainable like most were it is in the tender. You have to release the side arms, unscrew the the piece holding motor in place. ( they have tiny screws holding it in place ) at least my other one does.

It arrived about an hour ago. No power to the track, waiting for new battery. Yes that is a gun metal gray 400E behind it.

If he installs and then fires up the engine in neutral on the tracks, the battery will charge. The only thing the battery does is keeps the sounds and lights running for the split second you change directions. And for a few seconds when power is cut for the shutdown sequence. You won't be needing a lot of power.

While I don’t disagree with you at all Ron, when it comes to someone that doesn’t really know how the system works, I always insist on the safe bet, KNOW it’s charged before installing,….or if using a BCR, completely read the instructions before lifting a finger……you’re one of the rare exceptions buddy, you get it!!…..😉
