Who here models the Panama Canal? Me neither. Fortunately this steam shovel was used all over the USofA. So whatever you model where they would excavate this is worth considering. Be that as it may sometimes you come across something that is so darn interesting that it doesn't matter if you have use for it at the time or not. You buy it just for the possibility of using it. So it was yesterday as I was killing time waiting for an Ebay auction to finish. Suddenly I was presented with an item which immediately piqued my interest. Introducing the Bucyrus Steam Shovel! 1/48 O scale with functional trucks (wheels roll/trucks swivel/coupler not so sure of). This thing is so cool. If you have an interest to kick the tires either go on Ebay or better yet go to Outback Toy's web site. They are located in Litiz PA and specialize in farm/outdoor equipment models in various scales. Their direct price is $30.00 less than their Ebay listing. No sales tax, and free shipping. They currently have more than 10 in stock according to their Ebay listing. It even comes with a piece of track to display it on. I sure would hate to dust this thing, but look at the bragging rights your layout would have. There is more detailed info on the store/Ebay listing or just Google Bucyrus Steam Shovel model and you will get all the info you need. I will put this thing up against Emile's Junker airplane any day! Bring it on Big Crabcake! If anyone is considering digging a scale trench in their layout, I would consider leasing this to you for an appropriate fee. All I would need now would be an 0-6-0 steam switcher to haul it around with. Now that would be some custom run with the appropriate road name of course. Mr. M/Stu have your ears on? OK Panama Canal not your thing, how about RR construction in Arizona? Attachments:

Who here models the Panama Canal? Panama Canal???! I had enough trouble compressing Cambridge Creek small enough that I could fit it, and the bascule bridge across it, onto the RFC train garden: To paraphrase the old movie line, "Steam shovel? We don' need no steenkin' steam shovel!!" [OTOH, that is really one fine model, if only I had the room! ]

I like that crane. It would be a fit on a consist with some Lionel TMCC Cranes...

I know the bridge. Beautiful job! What do you mean compress? Isn't that a doorway I see? What's that adjoining room for? And you call yourself a dedicated modeler! BTW I don't remember seeing clamps in the water the last time I was in Cambridge. Something new? Add some police cars and an ambulance with a drowned body for added authenticity.
Now that's the real Cambridge. Seriously though you nailed the water color.

I like that crane. It would be a fit on a consist with some Lionel TMCC Cranes... It was made in 2007 so these are all NOS items. An 0-4-0 pulled it to the desired location and then they built temporary tracks for it to run to dig up whatever they needed to dig moved it, not unlike how the Shay engines worked in the woods. Some of the old films of the building of the Panama Canal are fascinating to watch the shovel and trains in action. The model appears to be very accurate from all the photos that I saw.

BTW I don't remember seeing clamps in the water the last time I was in Cambridge. Something new? Add some police cars and an ambulance with a drowned body for added authenticity. Now that's the real Cambridge. Seriously though you nailed the water color. First off, thanks for the water color complement -- it's been a struggle to get it close, one repaint and the second two panels (temporarily joined by the clamps you noticed!) being slightly different (which I plan to obscure with streaks of a third color mix and more gloss ModPodge over the junctions, once it's all in place). "Compress" meant the portions of the bridge I decided to omit, in order to better fit it on the RFC train garden, which is its eventual home (the above pic was taken in the front part of our basement -- the door leads to my usual workspace and the home layouts -- which is where its currently under construction). To plan the compression, I took an aerial photo of the bridge, and sliced-and-diced it to shorten some non-unique portions of the bridge. For comparison, here's the original, full sized aerial shot of the actual bridge: And here's my "compression": Bodies or no, adding some emergency vehicles may be in the future when the bridge finally gets installed on the train garden layout, but I'm personally more eager to add the skipjack model I bought to populate the harbor, along with the Chesapeake Bay built deadrise workboats I'm still looking for . . .

Not even if they are better than Emile's Marklin model warplane. But I have had a hard look at the info about this model, reason(s) being (1) it strongly reminds me of the beautifully made O scale Civil Was steamers I got many years ago from SMR Trains before they sadly went out of business and (2) I have a non-functioning Legacy SP crane that is presently only a display piece that this could replace as such.
If I pull the trigger I'll post something here but don't anybody hold their breath. Thanks to runamuckchuck for bringing this to the Forum's notice.

Come come, are you ever too old to not have bragging rights about something? Even if it just to say you saw another day! I should have mentioned that the shed is removal and the boiler is viewable with all the piping, gears, chains etc. The detail really pops in the photos. Even if this thing only sits on a siding with a switcher nearby it will draw attention. There are some fascinating photos and a restored high definition video of the steam shovel in action digging the Panama Canal. Very interesting stuff.

Chuck, thanks for bringing this to OGF. Sounds like an impressoive car. Nothing to shovel around here, otherwise I might have bought one. There is a good account of the building of thePanama Canal in a book titled - Dreams of Iron and Steel - 7 Wonders of the19th Century. I have listened to it several times and never tire of it and get something new out of it every time. Look it up to see what the other 6 wonders are. Alfred
